Why Shorter, Polished Nails Are Becoming the Modern Power Move

The most photographed manicure in the room used to be the least practical one, too: dramatic length, elaborate art, nails built for the camera rather than the keyboard. That look hasn’t disappeared, but it’s no longer the default aspiration. A quieter style is taking its place: short to medium length, a timeless finish, polished rather than performative. Call it the CEO Manicure.

Behind it is a simple, practical shift. Women moving between back-to-back meetings, flights, workouts, and evening plans are increasingly choosing beauty that keeps pace with them, rather than beauty that requires working around. Ultra-long nails have always demanded a certain amount of accommodation – typing adjustments, phone gymnastics, the quiet inconvenience of everyday tasks becoming slightly harder. The CEO Manicure is a direct response: a length and finish considered enough to look intentional, restrained enough to disappear into a normal day.

The distinction between looking polished and being able to function matters more than it might seem. A manicure that interferes with typing a document, taking notes in a meeting, or using a phone without friction isn’t neutral; it’s a small, repeated tax on the working day. Shorter, rounded shapes remove that tax almost entirely, which is precisely why they’re resonating with a demographic whose days rarely allow for compromise.

Katie Matthews, founder of Australian luxury press-on nail brand Nail Concrete, frames it as less a trend than a redefinition. “The modern power manicure isn’t about having the longest nails in the room,” she says. “Women want to look polished and put together, but they also need nails that allow them to type, work and move through their day comfortably. The CEO Manicure is refined, practical and quietly confident.”

CEO Medicure

It’s a description that captures a broader recalibration happening across beauty more generally: luxury increasingly defined not by excess, but by ease. A manicure that photographs beautifully but limits how you use your hands for two weeks was never quite as luxurious as it looked – the CEO Manicure reframes true polish as something that works with a full life, not around it.

This is also where the press-on category is having something of a moment. Traditionally viewed as a rigid, occasion-only option, press-ons have historically struggled with exactly the problem the CEO Manicure is solving for – comfort during real, everyday use. Nail Concrete’s proprietary Soft Bounce Technology, for example, addresses that gap directly, creating a thinner, more flexible nail engineered to move naturally with the nail bed rather than sit rigidly on top of it. The result is a manicure that behaves more like a natural nail throughout the day, while still delivering a premium, salon-level finish. It’s a meaningful shift for a category that’s often been positioned as a trade-off between convenience and quality – Soft Bounce is built to remove that trade-off, particularly for the professional women the CEO Manicure trend is built around.

As for the look itself: the CEO Manicure tends to sit in a tight, considered lane. The trend favours rounded or softly squared shapes over sharp or extended styles – almond and squoval nails offer the most versatile, professional-adjacent options. Colour leans toward the timeless rather than the trend-driven: soft nudes, milky whites, classic reds, and muted mauves dominate, all chosen for their ability to look finished in a boardroom and unremarkable everywhere else. Finish matters as much as colour – a glossy, glass-like top coat or a barely-there sheer finish wins out over heavy embellishment, reinforcing the idea that this manicure should look effortless rather than engineered.

The CEO Manicure isn’t really about length at all. In a beauty landscape that spent years rewarding visible maximalism, a manicure built around comfort, longevity, and quiet polish feels less like a trend and more like a correction: proof that looking put-together and actually functioning don’t have to be different choices.
