We’re not all destined to walk the runways of Milan or Manhattan. And, that’s perfectly okay. After all, everybody is different (literally) and life would be pretty dull if our only life goal is to change the size of our thighs.

And so, while shapewear may appear to sit at odds with this ethos, there’s no denying its power to enhance our appearance and help us feel good in our own skin. Not magic, not illusion – just a subtle sculpting that allows fabric to fall beautifully, contours to feel celebrated and the quiet confidence to feel transformed.

Why shapewear works

Shapewear has long carried whispers of secrecy. But today it’s something more sophisticated: a subtle (and stylish) partner in how we carry ourselves.

Why Shorter, Polished Nails Are Becoming the Modern Power Move

Firstly, it creates seamless lines. Fitted skirts, tailored dresses, and body-conscious tops all look sharper when there’s nothing to distract from their silhouette. The beauty of shapewear is that it works quietly behind the scenes, letting your outfit – and you – take centre stage.

Secondly, it’s flattering without being restrictive. We all have areas we might want to smooth or gently support, whether that’s a waistline, hips, or thighs. Shapewear gives subtle structure that enhances your natural curves rather than reshaping them. It’s not about perfection – it’s about confidence.

Thirdly, it works with tricky fabrics. Silk, satin, leather, or any form-fitting material can be unforgiving. A smart base ensures these pieces drape beautifully, letting you wear them with comfort and elegance.

How to Chose the Right Shapewear Size

Building a Shapewear Wardrobe

While certain reality TV Kweens have “skimm”ed the shapewear surface and lent their name to the idea of underwear for empowerment, it isn’t actually new. Nancy Ganz, often credited with revolutionising the modern shapewear movement, understood early on that supporting the body could feel affirming rather than restrictive. Her vision was never about hiding curves; it was about enhancing the natural lines of every woman’s silhouette. And decades later, that philosophy still rings true. Shapewear is not about perfection – it’s about feeling poised in your own skin.

And according to the the Isabella de Winter, Nancy Ganz’ Digital Marketing Manager, when shopping for your Shapewear Solution it’s important to consider the following three points.

1. What area of your body are you wanting a solution for – Tummy, Waist, Hip Thigh etc.
2. What level of support or firmness are you aiming for – Moderate for Shaping and Smoothing, Firm for added Support and Shaping, or Ultra Firm, to Shape and Sculpt?
3. Consider the outerwear/Apparel that you will be wearing your shapewear under, do you need a specific ‘Feature’, Low Back, Low Front, Strapless, Anti-chafe?

What size should your shapewear be?

In addition to the above, Isabella also recommends you, “Always select your usual clothing size, because it is the chosen level of support, Moderate, Firm or Ultra Firm that is the feature that will provide the support that you require.”

Choosing the right size is key to feeling comfortable and confident in shapewear. Too small, and it can dig in, restrict movement, or create unflattering lines; too large, and it won’t provide the subtle support that makes it transformative.

The goal is a snug, second-skin fit that gently smooths and enhances without compressing or reshaping. Think of it as tailoring for your body: it should move with you, not against you, letting your natural curves shine while creating a seamless foundation for your outfit. Comfort and confidence should always come first – because shapewear is meant to empower, not punish.

Ultimately, shapewear doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with a few essentials: a smooth, invisible base for everyday outfits, a supportive layer for fitted pieces, and a versatile piece for dresses or special occasions. The key is comfort, and confidence – choosing what works for your body and your style.

Shapewear is about options, not rules. It’s a tool, a style hack, a little boost of self-assurance tucked beneath your favourite pieces. And when you find what works for you, it’s transformative – not just for your outfits, but for how you carry yourself.

The right shapewear doesn’t change you, it elevates you. It’s the finishing touch that turns an outfit from fine to flawless, letting your confidence shine through with every step.
