Frizzy hair: it’s the unruly nemesis many of us battle daily. Espeicallty in Summer! Whether it’s caused by humid weather, over-processed strands, or just the universe playing tricks, frizz seems to find its way into our lives. Enter David Keough, celebrity hairstylist to stars like Miranda Kerr and Jessica Gomes, who’s here to set the record straight on viral frizzy hair myths

Myth 1: Dental floss can tame frizz

Yes, you read that right – dental floss. Some swear that tying off hair with dental floss can prevent frizz. But does it actually work?

David’s take? Surprisingly, dental floss isn’t damaging and can even help temporarily. “It leaves a light layer of wax over the hair, which takes away flyaways – for a moment,” he says. But before you raid your bathroom cabinet, remember this isn’t a long-term fix.

Myth 2: Silk pillowcases are the secret weapon

This viral tip suggests swapping your cotton pillowcase for silk to keep hair smoother. According to David, there’s truth to this one: “While you’re sleeping, silk allows hair to move over the pillowcase more easily than cotton, keeping it in better shape.”

For those with particularly frizz-prone hair, David also recommends adding a nighttime treatment, like John Frieda’s Miraculous Recovery or Secret Weapon. And if you tie your hair up, opt for a gentle scrunchie that won’t tug too tightly.

Myth 3: Dryer sheets can combat flyaways

Celebrities like Kourtney Kardashian have popularised rubbing dryer sheets on hair to tame flyaways. Effective hack or harmful fad?

“It’s just a myth,” says David. While dryer sheets might smooth flyaways momentarily, their effects are fleeting – lasting anywhere from a few minutes to an hour. Instead, he suggests a product designed to tackle the problem, like John Frieda Secret Weapon. Plus, using a targeted treatment from the brand’s Miraculous Recovery range can address the root cause of frizz, thanks to its ceramide-infused formula.

Myth 4: Kitchen paper and hairspray are a dream team

Wrapping hair in kitchen paper with hairspray is another trick that’s gone viral. Does it work?

David doesn’t hold back: “It’s more of a gimmick.” The method might smooth hair temporarily, but it’s not a sustainable solution. For real results, he advises turning to a good hair oil, like John Frieda’s Frizz Ease All-in-1 Serum, which can be applied to damp or dry hair for lasting control.

As for hairspray? David warns that products with high alcohol content can dry out your hair, exacerbating frizz over time. So, tread carefully with this hack.

Myth 5: Tin foil for smooth hair

Finally, the idea of using tin foil to reduce frizz has also been making the rounds. David concedes that this technique can work as a quick fix: “Sliding foil over the hair after styling can reduce the appearance of frizz – but it won’t last long.” For lasting frizz control, his go-to remains the John Frieda range.

What actually works for frizz?

After debunking these myths, David Keough reveals his never-fail methods for taming frizz. His secret weapons? John Frieda’s Frizz Ease All-in-1 Serum and Secret Weapon cream. “One to two pumps of the serum on damp, clean hair seals the strands and makes styling a breeze,” he says. For post-styling touch-ups, a small amount of Secret Weapon cream is a “game changer.”

And what about caring for the hair of high-profile clients like Miranda Kerr and Jessica Gomes? “It’s all about using good products and not over-styling or over-coloring,” David explains. “Less is more when it comes to maintaining beautiful hair.”
