Adding Tomato to Your Skin Care Routine is Not as Crazy as it Sounds

We’re certainly not suggesting you slap a couple of slices of heirlooms over your eyelids. And pay an ode to the DIY cucumber mask craze of the 90s. However, there is something to be said – even among scientifically speaking folk – about including plant-based botanicals in your quest for smoother skin. And, while the Kakadu Plum is well known for its natural Vitamin C or Bakuchiol Oil is renowned as nature’s Vitamin A, it turns out that your ruby red salad staple could be equally effective in your quest for a clearer complexion.

We Love Lypocene

The star of tomato-based skin care is traditionally Lycopene. An ingredient that acts as an antioxidant and helps to stabilise the imbalance caused by free radicals. As a result of supporting your skin’s collagen structure Lycopene can potentially reduce the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles. Plus, promotes brighter skin. And, before you brush it off as yet another beauty buzz word, consider this. In 1936, Madame Ella Bache (founder of the still-kicking skin care brand by the same name) observed peasant women in her native Hungary using slices of tomato on their cheeks and foreheads while working in the fields. This natural beauty ritual purified and refined their skin texture, resulting in a radiant complexion. It also helped mitigate the effects of sun and wind exposure.

Enzymes for exfoliation

In addition to the above, enzymes in tomatoes might offer mild exfoliation benefits, potentially removing dead skin cells. In fact, a 2011 study, suggested that the pectin and flavonoids in tomatoes have cleansing and antioxidant ingredients that can complement skin texture.

A very good source of vitamin C and E

Alongside Lycopene and enzymes, tomatoes are packed with vitamins C and E. The powerhouse ingredients that are renowned for their anti-inflammatory properties. With anecdotal evidence suggesting that the Vitamin C in tomatoes may promote collagen synthesis, we’ll certainly be trying the trend of tomato based skin care products for ourselves!

Will it work? There’s certainly no (tomato!) red flags that suggest it’s not worth a shot. So. .. watch this space!
