And, while the luxury of their lodgings may be low-key, their authenticity for delivering a truly eco-friendly experience is larger than life.
Today, the M&A Eco Beach Bungalows exemplify a profound commitment to sustainability through various strategies that are deeply rooted in bio-diversity-supporting business practices.
For example, all the bungalows at M&A are constructed using locally sourced mahogany wood, which was originally planted by McKinley during his childhood. This sustainable approach ensures minimal environmental impact by utilising Indigenous resources instead of imported lumber.
“My husband planted these trees years ago when he was still a kid,” says Arlene. “Instead of playing with the neighbours, his father made him plant trees! So, when we started we wanted to avoid importing any lumber. We wanted lumber that was here. Which is three different types of lumber that are in Palau.”
In addition to sustainable construction materials, the resort focuses on creating a natural and nurturing environment around each bungalow. Here, Arlene has planted indigenous plants and flowers, which not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also support native wildlife. Including the cute crabs that come crawling out every evening.
Although Arlene has previously attempted to stock domestically produced natural toiletries, her preference for priortising guest comfort means she generally leaves the purchase as a personal choice for visitors. However, she can happily recommend the best place to source reef-approved sunscreens and soaps.
Further to this, the resort extends its eco ethos to the kitchen. With chefs who champion a farm-to-fork approach in the food they serve. At M&A Eco Beach Bungalows’ locally sourced ingredients are a priority. Imported meat is used sparingly. Instead, guests feast on fresh meals, including fish caught by nearby fishermen and vegetables such as taro from regional markets. “This practice aims to support the economy and reduce the carbon footprint associated with importing food items,” says Arlene.
Waste reduction is also a priority at M&A – with the team adopting a zero-waste approach in their dining practices. Guests are encouraged to use the onsite BBQ facilities and self-cater instead of relying on pre-packaged meals. Leftover food, including fruit and vegetable scraps, is composted with banana leaves. Then, returned to their gardens to enrich the soil naturally and reduce landfill waste. And, meals are served in coconut bowls and on biodegradable banana leaf platters. All are designed to minimise the use of disposable napkins and other non-compostable materials. Although Arlene does laughingly admit she is “still trying to work out how to utilise this approach to serve soup!”
Beds, bbqs and beach accessibility
M&A Eco Beach Bungalows offer a variety of accommodation options with the beach as the backdrop. Six charming cottages to be specific. Each offering a unique blend of earthy sophistication and sustainability.
The two, studio-style Standard Cottages and Superior Cottages are perfect for couples or small families. Accompanied by rustic Summer huts, to cater to guests seeking outdoor charm along with their comfortable indoor accommodations.
For larger groups or bigger families, the Two-Bedroom Cottage presents itself as a spacious haven. With a full kitchen and barbecue grill, it offers the flexibility of home-cooked meals and outdoor dining experiences. While immersing oneself in the natural beauty that surrounds the resort.
Finally, the Deluxe Cottage shines with its unique accessibility features. Designed to be wheelchair-friendly, it boasts a half kitchen, an outdoor grill and a dining area. Making it a comfortable retreat for guests with special mobility needs.
It is a topic that Arlene is particularly passionate about. And, when pressed for M&A’s future plans, reveals an intention to expand its offerings to include accessible accommodations suitable for furthering its mission to provide inclusive experiences immersed in Palau’s natural beauty
“One of the focal points of inclusivity at M&A is our aspiration to accommodate guests needing specialised care, such as those requiring water therapy,” says Arlene. “This includes setting up facilities on the beach where individuals can access therapeutic activities in the ocean. Fully supported by trained therapists.” It is an initiative that aims to create an environment where guests with specific health needs can benefit from the Pacific’s healing properties. While surrounded by the natural tranquillity of Palau.

Don’t let M&A Eco Beach Bungalows’ diminutive kitchen queen fool you! Despite her demure nature Chef Sharlo’s expertise has flourished during her decade-long tenure at the resort. With her menu skilfully blending island delicacies with dishes that honour and pay homage to her Filipino heritage.
If you’ve never heard of Chamorro (the traditional style of cooking that reflects the rich culinary tapestry of the Chamorro people – Indigenous to the Mariana Islands – intertwined with Spanish, Filipino, Japanese, and American influences) M&A Eco Beach Bungalows is a great place for a crash culinary course into this cuisine.
Start your meal with delectable soft-shell crabs, expertly prepared to highlight their delicate taste and crispy texture.
