Three-time Olympian Lisa Curry wears many different hats; she’s mum, granny and wife to her loved ones while professionally, she is a best-selling author and the Co-Founder of leading health and wellness company Happy Healthy You. Now, at 60 years old, Lisa is learning to prioritise herself and put her health first! Her secret? Put your S.E.L.F first – sleep, exercise, love and food. We asked Lisa for her top signs your health is suffering and how she checks in with her S.E.L.F each day.

Recognising the warning signs

I’ve spent a lot of my life giving; to my country as part of the Australian swim team, to my family and to the beautiful women and community through my business Happy Healthy You. Writing my book, A Memoir – 60 Years of Life, Love and Loss was the perfect way to capture this part of my life.

I now find myself in this exciting but equally terrifying position of looking ahead and not knowing exactly what my next chapter holds, but I know it’s the chapter where I need to focus on me – and that’s what I’ve been doing!

I have learned to instantly recognise when my health is becoming a second priority. I know when life gets in the way of prioritising myself and my health, because my body starts to give me warning signs through muscle or joint pain, fluctuating weight, headaches, feelings of exhaustion and dehydration.

Your body is meant to move freely and feel spritely, even as you age! When I experience these warning signs, I try to evaluate which one of the vital S.E.L.F elements I’m not giving enough love or attention to and focus on this.

For five minutes each day, I go through this checklist ask myself:

sleep

Am I looking after my S.E.L.F?

S – Sleep: Am I getting enough sleep?

Am I providing my body with 7-9 hrs of quality sleep. Am I waking up feeling refreshed?

E – Exercise: Am I getting enough exercise?

Have I been able to move my body in a way that makes me feel good?

L – Love: How am I getting my feeling of love today?

Have I connected with loved ones or done something I feel passionate about today?

F – Food: Am I eating the right food?

Am I nourishing my body with the right food and drink?

The key to any type of change is accepting where you are, how you got there and identifying what you can do to make just a small change in the right direction every single day! We all deserve to feel like our best selves.

Happy Healthy You encourages women to focus on themselves and their health every day with the S.E.L.F mantra.
