In recent years, IPL and laser treatments have taken the beauty world by storm. They’ve become some of the most popular beauty treatments, and are touted as the solution for everything from hair removal to sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and acne scars. But what are IPL and laser treatments, and how do they work?

To explain what laser and IPL treatments do to your skin, we’ve teamed up with the beauty experts at Demi International. Read on to learn their answers to your frequently asked questions about both popular beauty therapy treatments.

What is IPL/laser?

First thing’s first: Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and laser treatments are two different types of controlled light skin treatments. Both work by destroying melanin in the hair follicle, but do so in slightly different ways. IPL treatments use a pulsating light source, whereas laser skin treatments use a single, monochromatic light source. The end results, however, are largely the same.

What is IPL treatment used for? What about laser treatments?

IPL, laser

Primarily, both IPL and laser treatments are used for hair removal. The two treatments remove unwanted hair and limit regrowth, in addition to targeting a number of skin concerns. Since both treatments target melanin, which gives colour to the hair follicle, they’re also effective ways of reducing dark spots on skin caused by hyperpigmentation.

How many treatments will I need?

Treatment frequency varies between individuals and will depend on your particular skin concern. As a rule, you’ll need at least 5 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart to reduce hyperpigmentation, and 4-6 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart for hair removal.

Who can perform IPL/laser treatments?

As specialised beauty therapy treatments, both IPL and laser should only be performed by a qualified beauty professional with an up to date laser safety certificate.
