With the school holidays here, it’s time to think about some options to get your teenagers active and having fun. The end of the school year with the warmer weather is the perfect time to try something new. With the pressures of study and homework long gone, summer holidays should be all about fun and new adventures with family and friends.

So here’s a list of options that you may not have considered, but they are all about fun, challenge and are cost effective for the family.

1# Indoor rock climbing

It’s a great way to challenge yourself both physically and mentally, requiring strength, stamina and concentration. Indoor climbing centres have a great team that will teach you the ropes and safety factors and encourage you all the way. It’s physically demanding and loads of fun, providing a great opportunity to improve your skills at your own pace.

2# Park run

Holds weekly 5km events around the country on Saturday mornings and everyone is welcome to join. The courses are well marked and volunteers ensure your safety and enjoyment. The runs are timed for those wanting to challenge themselves and go for a PB but it’s all about fun and providing an opportunity for everyone to get involved whether you want to run or walk. And best of all, it’s free.

3# Stand up Paddling

(SUP) is a great watersport for the whole family to try.  It requires balance and strength and is a great whole body workout. The boards are long and wide, making it easy for beginners to get started. So its easy to sit or kneel first if you need to build your confidence before standing up.  Once you are on your way it’s loads of fun and can be challenging or simply a relaxing cruise, it’s totally up to you.

4# Skateboarding

Another great option for teenagers and can be done at home, at the park or out on bike paths. Focusing on balance, leg and core strength it provides a great fitness challenge that is fun for teenagers. Skateboarding is popular around the world and will make its debut at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, one of five new sports to reach this pinnacle.

5# Mountain biking

An exciting upgrade on the basic bike riding we teach our kids. Cycling is fun and a great fitness activity for the whole family, but teenagers grow out of the family ride on bike paths. Swapping to a mountain bike designed for trails and off road riding provides a whole new physical and mental aspect that teenagers find exciting and challenging. It’s also a great activity that you can start by hiring equipment to test it out with friends before purchasing your own.

Give your teenagers the opportunity to try some new and interesting activities these holidays. Gift vouchers for activities and experiences also make great Christmas presents for family and friends. Summer holidays are for fun, relaxation and hanging out with friends and family. Add some new adventures to spice it up, have a few laughs and make some memories.
