Asian Fashion Festival: The OTHER Event To Style Spot This Week

With Australian Fashion Week set to wrap on Friday, fashionistas are expected to make the move from runways to running (through the mountains). The new spot to style spot? The Asian Fashion Festival, Heritage Runway 2025, on Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18, set in the stunning surrounds of The Blue Mountains. And, if the thought of a “runway in the rainforest” doesn’t excite you, in the same way that a sequin skirt does, then frankly, we don’t know what will!

Organisers are holding the festival for the first time. Enticing city slickers to head west, with the two-day extravaganza set to celebrate cultural diversity, creativity, and community. And, offering a refreshing contrast to the high-octane pace of urban fashion weeks. Think: designer showcases, thought-provoking panels, curated exhibitions, and the chance to score exclusive fashion finds from rising talents.

The Asian Fashion Festival’s emphasis is on multiculturalism and inclusion. Expect garments that weave together traditional Asian aesthetics with modern Australian flair. From intricate embroidery to bold contemporary cuts, the festival is a visual love letter to heritage and innovation.

On the guest list are some serious style heavyweights. Hollywood casting director Paul Weber (behind countless Emmy-nominated series and box office smashes) will be holding court on Saturday. And, lead an exclusive session about the dynamic relationship between fashion and film. It’s a rare opportunity to hear from someone who literally casts the faces that define pop culture.

Equally inspiring is Robbie Canner, the 66-year-old beauty queen who’s been rewriting the rules of the runway since her Ms. World 2018 win. A fierce advocate for women over 50 and a frequent face at New York Fashion Week, Robbie is all about challenging outdated beauty norms. And, embracing empowerment at every age. Expect wisdom, sass, and possibly a few struts worthy of a standing ovation.

Also making waves is local eyewear label venEyes, whose sleek frames are as fashion-forward as they are functional. They’ll be joined by standout designers like Marissa O’Donnell and Mr. Ginoo, whose collections promise to push creative boundaries.

Behind the scenes, students from the National Fashion College will also get real-world experience in styling and event coordination. And, proving that the future of fashion is in very capable (and stylishly manicured) hands.

“This event is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate diversity and creativity in fashion,” says Lovely Bandal, CEO of Regal Star Productions the team behind the festival. “We invite fashion lovers from across Australia and beyond to attend this unique showcase.”

And, she’s not wrong. While Australian Fashion Week might be drawing crowds in the city, this regional runway is making a bold statement: fashion isn’t just about location. Confirming that style can be found in the most surprising geographic co-ordinates.

Need a little extra motivation to swap your sequin mini for an (equally chic but infinitely warmer) woollen trench? Perhaps the idea of pairing couture with the magic of fresh mountain air might entice you? In any instance, whether you’re a fan of fancy frocks, or just after a fabulous weekend escape, the Asian Fashion Festival, is the place to be. Come for the clothes, stay for the inspiration. And maybe leave with a one-of-a-kind piece that supports a young designer’s dream.
