In this candid interview for the MAKERS video series, one of the greatest players of all time talks openly about growing up in California and the secrets to her incredible success.

Ranked No. 1 in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) with 21 Grand Slam singles titles, 15 Grand Slam doubles titles, and 4 Olympic gold medals, Serena Williams has become one of the most well-known professional American tennis players of her time.

Born in 1981 in Saginaw, Mich., Serena began training with her father and older sister, Venus, when she was 3 years old, eventually being 46-3 on the junior United States Tennis Association tour when she was 10. By 1995, before even graduating high school, Serena began playing professionally, quickly gaining recognition. Four years later, she captured the U.S. Open title, beating out her sister Venus.

After a series of health scares in 2010, Serena stepped back on the court a year later only to reclaim her title as the No. 1 tennis player in the world in 2013. By 2015, Sports Illustrated named Williams “Sportsperson of the Year.”

Throughout her career Serena has dedicated much of her time and money to helping those in violent communities and ensuring everyone has access to education with UNICEF, Beyond the Boroughs National Scholarship Fund, The Caliber Fund, Build Africa Schools, and The Equal Justice Initiative (EJI).
