The Top Beauty Trends From A Makeup Director

We recently had a chat with him about his experience in New York…

Some trends I saw at NYFW…

Matte skin, as seen at Michael Kors. We love a glowy and dewy finish for spring summer but a lightweight matte finish can offer an unexpected sophisticated look on a balmy evening.

Matte bold lips, as seen at DKNY & Jason Wu. Playing with lip colour textures will add a seductive finish to your look so try a matte  in a classic red, a pop of pink or a seductive mauve.

‘Boy brows’, as seen at Chromat. Brows are big and with the many products on the market from pencils to gels to brow mascaras, you can add texture, depth, shape and groom all in one!

Sculpting, as seen at Michael Kors & Derek Lam. Contouring and highlighting will always be prevalent on the catwalks and desired by women on the sidewalk. Emphasising your high points will never go out of fashion or season.

My most-used Maybelline products…

Maybelline NY FitMe Foundation in Matte & Poreless. The formula works like a dream and offers an even, matte finish without it looking ‘old’ or thick.

Maybelline NY Color Sensational Creamy Mattes Lipsticks. Each and every colour has been used in a myriad of ways. I’ve used this versatile range as a base on lids, for contouring cheeks and of course for beautiful nude lips. If you only knew how many celebrities have tried to ‘steal’ them from my kit over the last week.

Maybelline NY Lash Sensational Mascara. The current fave that delivers beautifully coated lashes while fanning them for a luscious and lengthened finish.  I couldn’t get enough of those great lashes.

My favourite show to work on at NYFW…

I loved Jason Wu for its elegance and nod to old school beauty with that classic red lip. Michael Kors for its chic finish and Marc Jacobs for its strong rock and roll aesthetic. I think the common and underlying link with these three shows, and why I loved them equally, was that they all celebrated and embodied a feminine and sensual quality. There was no androgyny or international look.

Some other highlights from the week…

A personal highlight for me was having the opportunity to work/meet with great talents like Julia Nobis, Bella Hadid, Lucky Blue Smith and Beth Ditto (who was a total joy) but it’s the sharing of information and knowledge backstage and working on teams who are led by makeup icons like Dick Page, Tom Pecheux, Monsieur Francois Nars that is truly invigorating. It really cannot get better than this!

One other experience reserved for fashion week is getting the chance to meet with the designer. Usually you’re there to do a job and prepare the model for the show but on occasions, designers will come backstage into hair and makeup. Last week I was fortunate enough to meet Michael Kors who was the nicest and most charming man. This year, his show was delayed by an hour due to a model fainting out of exhaustion. The dressers were trying to get the dress off her to put it on another girl but Michael called for an ambulance and said the dress was not important.

The best beauty trick I learned backstage…

To make your foundation mould with your skin for the ultimate flawless finish, Tom Pecheux rubbed his hands together and pressed his warm palms onto the model’s finished and powdered face. The warmth of his palms and fingers allowed him to rework the foundation into the skin to give the look of true and real skin rather than foundation having been applied to the skin.
