The Kind Farm Inc: Saving Horses from Slaughter and Giving Them a Second Chance

Lucinda Scarman, Founder of The Kind Farm Inc, shares what inspired her to start her animal rescue initiative and her vision for the future.

I’ve always loved animals and wanted to do something to help them – though I had never been around horses until I turned 40 and was given a horse as a surprise birthday present. This horse, Seshi, led me on a very fascinating journey and out of my normal life into the country…living off grid in a shack, surrounded by horses on the edge of Mullumbimby in Northern NSW.

Just over a year ago I started The Kind Farm Inc horse rescue and began saving horses who were marked for slaughter or at risk of entering the horse sale system…which for old, injured and untrained horses too often ends in them being slaughtered – usually for pet food.

It’s evolved into a community effort with people offering land to host the horses and having the horses across a few properties – with myself and volunteers – local teenager, Wyuna and my daughter Coco, feeding and caring for the horses.

We have welcomed horses injured from racing, unwanted young unhandled horses, ex rodeo horses as well as some adorable miniature horses like Frankie, who was displaced in the Northern NSW floods.

Whilst it is sad and confronting to see how horses can be treated and the trauma they experience…it’s also incredibly rewarding to see horses heal and find loving adoption homes like Frankie just has.

Horse with Wyuna and Lulu is “Sox”. Sox was rescued from slaughter – he was young, unwanted, and unhandled.

Frankie was washed away in the floods along with his paddock mate, who did not survive. He was rescued but never the same and he was very nervous and no one could get near him. Over the time he has been with us, he has learned to trust again and has just found a loving adoption home.

The vision is to have a large property where the horses can run free in a herd with the space and peace to heal, as well as a facility for horses in rehabilitation.
