“Toni Maticevski has managed to morph, adapt and defy the boundaries of fashion, crossing the line that divides fashion design with fine art. For anyone who has ever dreamed of wearing a masterpiece, this is a must-see exhibition,” said Karen Quinlan, Director of the Bendigo Art Gallery.
The Melbourne-based fashion designer first started his career in New York where he worked for designer Donna Karen.
He then moved onto Paris to work for Cerruti Womenswear and later returned to Melbourne where he mastered his unique trademark style. He defies traditional designs by draping, tailoring and lining his fabrics into innovatively assembled pieces.
His gowns have have been showcased at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York and Australia. Maticevski has collaborated with many famous brands and designers over his career. He worked with Phillip Adams Ballet Lab, creating pieces that were contributed to the Australian Ballet.
Best known for his reinvention of classic designs and his structurally intriguing and artistic designs which expertly dress the female form.
The exhibition will include work from the beginning of his career up to his most recent masterpieces. There will also be a visual archive of the artists’ images and illustrations which follow the journey of his illustrious career.
Some of the highlights of the exhibition is the Monaco gown Princess Mary wore to the Danish King’s 80th birthday and the gold lame gown worn by Jessica Mauboy in the 2014 Eurovision competition.
The exhibition will be open at The Bendigo Art Gallery from the 13th of August until the 20th of November 2016.
