Who were Lyle and Eric Menendez?

Lyle and Eric Menendez were brothers who murdered their parents Jose and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez. The incident occurred inside their Beverly Hills mansion in 1989.

The pair used shotguns to kill the Entertainment Executive and his wife in their living room. There’s no doubt about who did it.

The brothers were convicted in 1996 and received a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

What was the motive for the murder?

The prosecution successfully argued that they murdered simply to inherit the family’s fortune. But was it an act of self-defence?

The brothers claim they were subject to a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse from their parents.

Where can I find out more?

Netflix is showing “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” about the case. The anthology series stars Javier Bardem, Chloe Sevigny, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, and Cooper Koch. This isn’t something to binge – you might want to take it slowly as some episodes are hard to watch and very graphic. Take into account, that the brothers consider this retelling to contain “blatant lies”.

This was followed by a documentary released on Netflix called “The Menendez Brothers”. The two men spoke in extended interviews about what happened. They gave interviews to director Alejandro Hartmann about growing up, the abuse, murders, and life in prison.

If you only watch one, the documentary is better and perhaps more accurate. Due to an initial mistrial, the judge decided that the second trial could not consider manslaughter or many pieces of evidence. It clearly explains how the judge was biased and refused to consider other judgements besides murder.

What happened recently?

In May 2023, attorneys for the brothers filed a habeas corpus petition seeking a review of the case. The legal team and family would like the brothers to be considered for a charge of manslaughter rather than murder as a more suitable sentence.

At the time of the first two trials, the impacts of sexual and physical abuse on children were not widely understood or taken into consideration.

The brothers have served over 30 years in prison.

New evidence to be considered includes a letter from Erik Menendez to his cousin before the murders and evidence from other family members. Another person has come forward with abuse claims against the father.

Last week around 20 members from both sides of the family held a press conference calling for a new lesser sentence. Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón’s office has announced that he is reviewing the case.

It’s time for the Menendez Brothers to be released. #justiceforericandlyle
