How to Age Timber Furniture With A Paint Finish

To create an ‘aged’ paint finish is a simple process that requires a base and top coat in two different colours.

The top coat is rubbed back to reveal a little of the base colour, which creates the impression it’s worn over time. For a more authentic look, ensure you rub back the top coat in the places where it would naturally receive the most wear and tear, which is predominately the edges.

You can use regular acrylic paint for this project but we’ve chosen to use chalk paint as its matte, chalky finish is conducive to creating an aged appearance. It also sticks to almost anything, so requires little-to-no prep — and the drying time is incredibly fast so you don’t have to wait long between coats. The only downside is the matte finish will mark easily, so you must seal with a wax or acrylic sealer. We used beeswax.

What to do:

1. Thoroughly clean your furniture.
2. If there are any obvious bumps or flakes, lightly sand and wipe clean — otherwise you can skip this step.
3. Apply one or two coats of your base colour and allow to dry.
4. Apply one coat of your top colour and allow to dry.
5. Lightly sand back the top coat in selected spots to reveal the base colour.
6. Apply a small amount of beeswax with a soft, clean cloth (an old t-shirt is perfect), wiping off any excess as you go.
