Celebrity trainer James Duigan says: “In my eyes, the word ‘lean’ doesn’t mean a body that’s gym-honed to within an inch of its life or one that’s scarily skinny. It means a body that’s just the right side of athletic.”

Filmed exclusively for TheCarousel, follow James as he takes you through some simple exercises to achieve leaner legs that can be done anywhere at any time of day and require no equipment.

The Disco Lunge is fantastic for your posture, it is a great fat burner, it engages your tummy and it tones your legs. Stand tall in perfect posture with your thumbs up. As you lunge forward throw your arms back up over your head. Remember to keep your tummy engaged and land on your heel as you lunge forward.

The Drop Lunge is a great way of stretching through the hip and working your butt at different angles, which keeps your body guessing and burning more fat. It is also great for stability and keeping your joints healthy and safe. Make sure you keep your tummy engaged and your belly button drawn in and your hips stay facing forward.

The single leg Romanian deadlift is brilliant for improving your stability, and burning fat and toning your butt. As always keep your tummy drawn in and engaged so that your spine stays safe, and keep your hips facing forward.

JAMES: Hi there, my name is James Duigan, founder of Bodyism and author of the ‘Clean and Lean’ diet books. Welcome to our exclusive series of films for TheCarousel.

This week we are going to show you three simple exercises designed to give you long, lean, beautiful legs.

The disco lunge is my favourite exercise, it is also the favourite of supermodels the world over. It is fantastic for your posture, it is a great fat burner, it engages your tummy and it tones your legs.

Stand tall in perfect posture with your thumbs up. It’s a fantastic way of engaging the deep postural muscles. As you lunge forward throw your arms back up over your head. What this does is help your spine into extension.

Key things to remember are keep your tummy engaged and land on your heel as you lunge forward.

The drop lunge is a great way of stretching through the hip and working your butt at different angles, which keeps your body guessing and burning more fat. It is also great for stability and keeping your joints healthy and safe.

Make sure you keep your tummy engaged and your belly button drawn in towards your spine and also make sure your hips stay facing forward.

Aim for between 10-15 reps on each leg. Obviously if you can’t, then stay where you can and take it easy.

This exercise is the single leg Romanian deadlift. It’s not as scary as it sounds but it is brilliant for improving your stability, and burning fat, and toning your butt.

Make sure that you maintain perfect posture all the way through the movement. As always keep your tummy drawn in and engaged so that your spine stays safe, and keep your hips facing forward.

Repeat this ten times to get the most out of the exercise.
