For the first time in the popular TV series the hit show took home the best drama series award, pipping Mad Men to the post.

Game of Thrones won 12 awards from its 24 nominations, making it the biggest record holder since The West Wing won nine awards at the 2000 Emmys.

Best supporting actor was won by one of the show’s favourites, Peter Dinklage, who plays Tyrion Lannister.

The fantasy drama also took home Emmys for best directing (David Nutter) and best writing (David Benioff and Dan Weiss) among others.

Since its 2011 debut, Game Of Thrones has been absent on the winner’s podium, which made the victory sweeter than ever for the cast.

Game Of Thrones Record Emmys Win

“We knew that there would be some resistance at first to a show set in this genre … we knew it would take a while,” said the show’s writer David Benioff.

“But we’d hoped if we did our jobs and if we were fortunate enough to be blessed with the cast and crew that we were blessed with … and if we got lucky, that we’d get there eventually.”

With the fifth season suspenseful finale still fresh in everyone’s minds Game Of Thrones was bound to do well at the ballot box.

Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen on the show, explained her absence from the award ceremony.

“I think I might be late for the Emmys… How far is it from Spain?”, Emilia told her Instagram followers. She was busy filming the 6th season of Game Of Thrones.
