Barking Up the Right Tree … Sydney Rescue Dog Goes From Wags to Riches

Sometimes life throws you a bone. And, for Vivid, a tiny Mini American Shepherd from Sydney, that crumb truly came it when she least expected it! Rescued from a breeder juggling 60 other dogs, Vivid was the ultimate scaredy-pup, hiding under the bed and growling at anything that moved. She was a real underdog in every sense of the word.

Fast forward a few months, and this timid tail-wagger has gone from a quivering furball to Australia’s newest canine celebrity. Vivid has been crowned the official face of the RSPCA Lottery, stepping into the spotlight as ‘Spotto,’ the four-pawed ambassador helping raise funds for more than 80,000 animals cared for by the RSPCA every year. Talk about going from rags to wags!

Emma Malik, Vivid’s foster-turned-forever human, says the early days were no walk in the park. “Those first weeks were rough,” she recalls. “She hid under the bed, lunged at shadows, and growled at anything unfamiliar. I wasn’t even looking for another dog, having just said goodbye to my senior rescue, but somehow we found each other. She’s been the best addition to our family ever since.” With patience, training, and a whole lot of belly rubs, Vivid blossomed into a confident, clever companion who now aces agility courses, herds sheep, and even mentors other anxious foster dogs. She’s truly living her best life and showing everyone that every dog has its day.

Vivid’s journey embodies the RSPCA Lottery’s mission: giving animals a second bite at life. Kirsty Moore, RSPCA National Lottery Manager, says it best: “From a frightened pup to the face of our national Lottery campaign, Vivid represents every animal whose life changes because of our supporters. She’s a real-life tail-wagger of hope.”

As the winning ambassador, Vivid isn’t just enjoying a $1,000 Pet Prize Pack – she’s helping the nation see that rescue dogs are no small fry. Every ticket sold helps animals like Vivid get the food, shelter, and medical care they need to fetch their own second chance. Thanks in part to the Lottery, the RSPCA helped over 81,000 animals across Australia last year, making it one of the organisation’s most pawsome fundraising initiatives since its 2024 launch.

Vivid’s story is proof that even the most timid pups can turn into top dogs with the right love and guidance. She’s a reminder that life isn’t always a walk in the dog park – sometimes it’s a bit ruff – but with patience, courage, and a few treats along the way, any underdog can climb out from under the bed and into the spotlight. She’s shaking off fear, wagging her way into hearts, and barking up the right tree for every animal in need.

Whether you’re a lifelong dog lover or just someone who enjoys a feel-good tale, Vivid’s journey will have you sitting up and begging for more. She’s proof that rescue dogs can go from trembling to triumph, and that a little love can turn any tail around.

Because when it comes to giving animals a second chance, Vivid proves it’s always worth putting your best paw forward. After all, life’s too short not to stop and sniff the roses – or in Vivid’s case, chase a few tennis balls along the way!
