DIY Design Course: How To Become An Interior Designer
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

I had the pleasure to review a six week online styling course called “Verandah House Design Series” run by mother and daughter duo Judy and Jess from Veranda House interiors, Brisbane, Queensland.

Not only was it extremely informative but fun and as first time presenters Judy and Jess were friendly, welcoming and generous with their knowledge, advice, expertise and visual presentation.

Each week you watch a video plus a workbook section that can be down loaded for your own use in the future with loads of information, graphics of different layouts, imagery and inspiration. The course can also be viewed at your own leisure and you can return to any of the lessons whenever you need a refresher.

The first week concentrated on how to become a “hunter & gatherer”, how to find and gather inspiration for items and objects you wish to display; how to assemble mood boards and how to edit and refine your selections and colour schemes. The general thrust for this first series was basic styling of your home with visual displays of various ways to dress, or style, coffee tables, sideboards, bedrooms, bookcases and outdoor veranda spaces.

Of course there is no shortage of visual imagery in the design field. Pinterest, Instagram, Houzz, magazines and TV show it all, however the interest is how Judy and Jess give the viewer the basic “principles” of styling; how to look at your table, bookcase or sideboard as a blank canvass; how to think of each space as a grid; how to work with in the grid; how to think in groups of twos or threes and the correct way to “layer” a space.

This certainly helps you look at a space differently, how to group objects for interest, beauty and balance instead of plonking a few bits on a tray and hoping for the best!

Judy & Jess impart a load of insider knowledge with lots of tips and tricks of the trade. Where to forage for interesting items; how to build up an enviable collection of “styling props & objects” and how to display them like a pro.
