Just like any other fashion item, when you pop on a lipstick you want to feel confident it’s right for you. But with that many shades, textures and applications out there, how do you choose?

According to Sharon and Iantha, our beauty gurus, it’s all about skin tone. Given they have very different colouring, in this video they explain the reasoning behind their must-haves of the moment – in nude, bright and dark shades.

Oh, and they don’t necessarily come in your traditional bullet either!

Iantha: Hey everyone, today we are going to be talking about our favourite lipsicks. We’re talking about one nude, one bright and one dark for each of our skin tones.

Sharon: So we’re starting with nudes, I think nudes are possibly the trickiest lip colour to pick out. Everyone kind of struggles with this and I find.. I’m very, very pale, and I have quite a cool undertone, it’s a really tricky skin tone to match with a nude, but I found that something that also has a cool undertone that’s not too brown tends to work. So, something that’s a dusty pink or a cooler pink tone nude works well, and one of my favourites at the moment is what I’m wearing right now – it’s one of the NudeSTIX lip pencils. You can use this on your cheeks and your lips – and this is in the colour Whisper, so it’s that lovely almost grey toned pink that works really well on that cooler skin tone. They’re a very creamy texture and they last pretty well on the lips too – they feel nice and balmy.

Iantha: So I’ve got warm-to-olive skin and my nude lipstick pink is ‘Shanghai Suzy’ in ‘Miss Leah’, so I can sort of get away with warmer pinks and caramel tones for my skin tone, but my pick is sort of like a medium pink to beige. I think it works quite well for my skin (Sharon: It’s gorgeous on you, yeah it’s beautiful) and it’s actually quite nourishing as well so it doesn’t dry my lips out, especially in winter which is really important (Sharon: Always good).

Sharon: So moving on to brights, I have chosen this ‘Kat Von D Liquid Lip colour in ‘Jeffree’, it’s amazing, I’m in love with this formula, it’s like a matte lipcream that you paint on that sets and is super duper long lasting, it stays nice and matte. This is great texture for those of you that like to over-draw your lips and make them look a little bit bigger, do a little bit of a ‘Kylie Jenner’ on us. This colour looks a little bit brighter on my skin tone again because I have a cooler skin tone and this has got such a warm undertone. That contrast of tones really make it pop against my skin. So if you want to make a real statement with your colour, go for a colour-tone that’s the opposite of natural skin colour tone.

Iantha: And I’m the complete opposite so I’ve got, once again, a warmer skin-tone and I’ve gone with blue-based pink, this ones from ‘Ciate’ and the shade is ‘Sass pot’ (Sharon: Great name) and it’s a velvety lip cream so it applies like a lip gloss, but it dries like a lipstick almost. It’s still quite smoothing, it’s not drying or anything, in fact is so light that I licked my lips right before this video, and I just completely forgot, but it’s still here, yeah.

Sharon: And finally for a deeper colour I’ve gone with one of the ‘Rimmel Provocalips’ which is a tricky word to say, one of their lip colours, this is in the colour of ‘550’ ‘Play with Fire’. It’s a really deep kind of blood red, really, really vampy, and again this is a really similar formula to the ‘Kat Von D’ lipsticks, except this is a duel ended one, so you paint on the colour first – it sets like a long wearing lip cream – and then you add the gloss separately if you want to add more shine or, I like to keep the matte. I like matte lips and this colour is great on my skin tone again because it’s cool so it has that pinky-red tone. If you’re looking at a red and it looks slightly pink that means that it’s cool as opposed to looking more orange which is warmer. So with my sort of colouring they’re the kind of reds that you want to go for if you want it to look a little bit more wearable.

Iantha: My colour of choice is ‘Sportsgirl’s Dark Angel’, and think it’s just got that right mixture of dark red and purple and a little bit of pink so it still looks a little bit more wearable without looking too gothic or too vampy. As a top tip make sure your lips are really well conditioned because dark colours like these will really show every lump and bump and line that you have in your lips.

Sharon: That’s very true, what I tend to do actually when I’m doing my makeup, before I even start my foundation, I’ll put lip balm on and by the time I’m ready to do my lips it’s had a chance to sink in.

Iantha: So tell us what your favourite lipstick colour is in the comments below.
