Long a by-word in beauty for everything OTT, 80’s beauty has been the sleeper trend of the last twelve months and was everywhere at this year’s award season including the 2019 Golden Globes. In stark contrast to last year’s sombre all-black mood, this year’s red carpet has been awash with colour.

Stars like Camilla Belle, Emmy Rossum and Lupita Nyong’o coordinated their vivid gowns with matching jewel-toned eyes. Read ahead for a full breakdown of Lupita’s show stopping look.

The Eyes Have It:

Barose created a bright 1980’s look for Lupita Nyongo, inspired by the star’s dazzling cobalt-blue Calvin Klein sheath.  Barose advised that the key to to keeping the 80’s beauty look modern is introducing colour in “small doses with liner and lashes without having the colour on the whole eyelid.” Barose used Lancome Grandoise eyeliner in Matte Saphir on the upper lash-line, and Liqui-pencil in Cote De Azure on the waterline, before tying the look together with a swipe of Lancome Monsieur Big Mascara Top Coat in Fearless Blue.

Statement Lips:

“The old adage if you are wearing strong colour on the lids you can’t do so on the lips doesn’t apply here.” Barose selected a matte finish lipstick, L’Absolu Rouge Drama Matte in Dram’atic, grounding the look without adding competing shine.

All about that base (and hair!):

The key to pulling off a bright look is keeping your base immaculate. Think fresh rather than glossy skin, and hair drawn back to showcase the eyes. Barose used Lancome’s Prep & Matte Primer beneath Teint Idole Ultra 24 Long Wear Foundation with a dusting of Translucent Loose Setting Powder to keep skin velvety. Vernon Francois styled Nyong’o’s  hair in a regal bouffant that swept back into an intricate beaded braid.

If you’re a little colour shy but inspired by Nyong’o’s hypnotic look, try tight-lining. Apply an eye pencil that contrasts your eye colour beneath the lashes on your upper waterline – a fail safe trick to subtly harness eye brightening benefits.
As Barose says “Have fun with makeup. You’re seeing the return of the 80’s in fashion so it’s fun to do it with makeup too!”
