These Islands Are as Magical as The Maldives … But You’ve Probably Never Heard of Them

Guide to Travelling to Palau

With glistening waters that hide some of the best diving spots in the world, you could be forgiven for confusing this destination with Belize. But, it’s not Central America. Its restaurants serve up sashimi as fresh as the type you’d typically taste in Tokyo. However, it’s not Japan. And, it’s now a swift six-hour plane trip from Australia’s East Coast. Yet it’s not Bali.

It is Palau. A tiny, Western Pacific nation, of less than 20,000 locals. Recently made more easily accessible for Aussies via a direct flight on Air Nauru. And, with the trip affectionately called the Palau Paradise Express, we were determined to discover if the journey to the archipelago of 340 islands truly merits its marketed status as a divine destination…

Attainable yet untamed, Palau has long beckoned travellers with its unspoiled landscapes, undocumented cultural heritage and unparalleled marine biodiversity. However, as tempting as the underwater treasures of this island nation – east of the Philippines and west of the Federated States of Micronesia – may be, the challenge of flying 22 hours to reach it has probably also previously deterred tourists from making the trip. With the four-stop-flight placing it in the “too-hard” basket.

Changing this is Air Nauru’s new direct flights from Brisbane. Departing every Tuesday at 11.30 pm, this evening route is designed to whisk explorers over the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean by dark. And, offer a seamless journey to this enchanting escape while you sleep.

The flight is remarkably restful. With the effects of jet lag minimal due to Palau’s mere one-hour time difference from Australia. This means that as the plane glides towards touchdown, passengers can anticipate a breathtaking welcome to the vibrant former capital Koror. Just as the sun begins to paint the sky in hues of pink and gold.

Upon arrival, travellers are required to commit to the Palau Pledge. A promise made public through a passport signature. And, an example of Palau’s many environmental preservation efforts. One that declares a willingness to respect local ecological and cultural heritage during your stay. To preserve the land. To not take what isn’t freely given. And, to refrain from causing harm without self-defence. All while leaving only footprints that will be washed away by the ocean.

Those prepared to put pen to paper will be rewarded with the opportunity to immediately immerse themselves in the allure of the islands. Whether that looks like a morning dive into the crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life, exploring lush jungles and historic sites by afternoon, or opting to unwind before adventuring.

Travelling with Air Nauru also includes the convenience of a return flight timetabled eight days later. A strategic schedule that allows ample time to soak in the best offerings of this Pacific paradise before bidding it farewell.

Launch fares on Nauru Airlines’ Palau Paradise Express are available from $999 return.
