Stick Beauty Products Are Back … And This Time They’re Not Going Anywhere

Ten-step routines and beauty blender gymnastics have worn a lot of people out. Bathroom counters increasingly look like lab benches rather than vanities, and the appetite for anything that simplifies the process has never been higher. That’s the gap stick makeup has quietly filled – and why it’s become one of the most requested formats in beauty this season.

The Case for the Stick

A format that asks nothing more of you than “swipe and go” is a hard thing to argue with. No brushes, no sponges, no seventeen minutes you don’t have before you’re out the door. Stick makeup – bronzer, blush, contour, highlighter, all of it – has moved from a backstage artist trick to a genuine everyday essential, and the appeal is easy to break down:

  • Speed. A stick can be applied and blended with fingertips in seconds, which matters enormously on the mornings that don’t allow for a full face.
  • Precision, when you want it. Unlike loose powders or liquids, sticks let you target exactly where you want colour – cheekbone, brow bone, jawline – without leaving excess product where it wasn’t invited.
  • Buildability. Because you can control application so easily, sticks make layering simple, letting you build the same product from a barely-there flush to a full, sculpted look.
  • Portability. No spills, no mess, no separate brush required – a stick just lives in your bag, ready for a touch-up wherever you are.

Not Just a Trend … A Format Shift

The current stick makeup wave isn’t about one product going viral. It’s a broader shift in how people want to apply makeup at all: fast, intuitive, skincare-adjacent, and built for actual daily life rather than a studio setting. Today’s formulas have caught up too. Brands now create sticks with cream-based, skin-loving formulas, often infusing them with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid instead of the drier, harder-to-blend formulas of years past.

The format also suits the current “your skin but better” moment in makeup particularly well. Sticks tend to melt into skin rather than sit on top of it, which fits the broader move away from heavy, matte, fully-covered complexions toward something that looks more like your actual face, just optimised.

One to Watch

Few brands have as much claim to the stick makeup category as Milk Makeup, born out of Milk Studios in downtown New York and credited with helping define multitasking, stick-format beauty a decade ago. The brand has just re-entered the space with a new generation of formulas – six multitasking tools across 42 shades, engineered to swipe, blend, blur, bronze, sculpt and glow, alongside a new hybrid Line + Fill lip liner. It’s less a single launch than a full reinvention of the format the brand helped build in the first place.

“For me, makeup starts with instinct. Not trends, not rules,” says Frank B, Milk Makeup’s Global Artist Director. “Just Dusty Rose lips and cheeks applied in the moment and worn late into the night.” That instinct-first philosophy runs through the entire collection, with ultra-creamy, skincare-focused formulas infused with hyaluronic acid and ceramides that you can swipe on and blend with nothing more than your fingertips.

Milk Sticks Stick Beauty Products

To launch the range, Milk Makeup took the collection to the streets of Sydney for its Scout Series, casting original, real-world faces rather than professional models. Makeup artist Rowi Singh created quick, expressive looks on each subject using the new Sticks, while fashion photographer Myles Kalus captured the results in street-style portraits built around individuality rather than a single, uniform “look.”

“The formulas are creamy, buildable and blend effortlessly with just your fingers, so I could create everything from a really natural look to something more expressive in just a few swipes – there are no rules with makeup,” says Singh.

It’s a strong signal that the category isn’t just trending, it’s maturing, with the brand that built it now refining it for how people actually get ready today.

Milk Sticks launched exclusively at Sephora Australia online from 21 August, and in Sephora stores nationally from 1 September.
