Although easily accessible (less than a three-hour flight from all other Australian capital cities. Except Hobart), Adelaide has remained a relatively under-the-radar option for travellers looking for a relaxed interstate staycation. Particularly, for those seeking the kind of food, festivals and famous beaches that its East Coast counterparts – Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast – are all respectively known for. But, don’t let its demure demeanour deter you! The City of Churches offers an excellent opportunity to enjoy an easy escape without taking any annual leave. With this two day Adelaide itinerary showcasing just how simple it is to discover the best of SA’s capital in a single weekend.

Food, glorious food

Adelaide’s fast-growing culinary scene is a brilliant blend of local flavours and global influences. With 2KW one of the best examples. Perched atop an old bank building at one of the city’s most prominent corners, the restaurant and bar should be high on the list of places to take visitors to Adelaide. And, not just for the view.

From dinner to drinks and desserts, 2KW’s selection is outstanding. Featuring a variety of interesting choices based on South Australian produce, but influenced by flavours from around the world. The seasonal menu encourages sharing. With the witty wait staff well-versed in suggestions for ideal combinations that complement the communal dining philosophy. Menu highlights to start include the smoked mushroom and warrigal green empanada and the salt-baked beetroot with woodside goat curd, pistachio, caraway, and rye whiskey. For mains, try the Nomad Farms chicken, with shio koji, charred cream corn, dried citrus. The triple-cooked salt and vinegar potatoes are also excellent. Those with a sweet tooth will struggle to pick between the pavlova with yuzu curd, raspberry, whipped cream and pistachio praline or the chocolate, caramel and 78 degree Australian whiskey tart with whipped mascarpone. Our tip? A little from column A. A little from column B…

Other highlights for hungry travellers include Italian restaurant eatery Latteria and its Milo Tiramisu. Mother Vine’s Mediterranean share plates (and a surprisingly underrated burger). And, FU for creative cocktails that pair perfectly with an Asian-inspired bar menu. Including a ridiculously good smashed cucumber with Szechuan chilli oil and wasabi. Alternatively, commit to the full A-list experience and hire Michelle Cosmai of MC Chauffeur Services for an all day tour – that includes lunch at celeb-hotspot Star of Greece. Despite the Hellenic name, this eatery atop the spectacular cliffs of Port Willunga actually offers a creative Mod-Oz menu against a beautiful coastal backdrop. Making it little surprise that stars such as Sam Smith have been regularly spotted dining there.

Feel good spas

Travellers keen to include a decadent day spa in their interstate staycation itinerary should seek out Davaar House. A landmark new health hub in the city, with a holistic approach to wellbeing that nurtures body, mind, and soul.

Nestled in a meticulously restored 19th-century mansion (complete with original fireplaces and decorative details), this elegant retreat on South Terrace and Hutt Street is a light-filled haven for self-discovery and renewal. Here, the vision of owner Fiona Fiorinotto, a seasoned beauty therapist, ensures Davaar House remains committed to comprehensive wellbeing. And, offers a diverse range of treatments to execute this. “Nothing rests solely on the surface at Davaar House,” Fiona explains. “We are about beauty beneath the skin and getting to the source of concerns. Ultimately delivering effective solutions through holistic therapeutic techniques.”

Among the standout offerings are the exclusive RollShape and ActivBed Pilates Pod, both unique to Adelaide. RollShape utilises rotating wooden rollers, infrared, and collagen lamps to stimulate the lymphatic system, enhance circulation, and detoxify the body. The ActivBed Pilates Pod, a first in Australia, combines mat and Reformer Pilates within a private, infrared-equipped capsule – providing a unique environment for stretching, strengthening, and sculpting. Davaar House also features an array of innovative therapies such as red light, salt and oxygen therapy. The HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy) AirPod is also worth checking out.

The centre’s holistic approach extends to traditional wellness practices as well. Stress-relieving massage sessions, nourishing facials using Fiona’s own ‘Davaar House’ skincare line, and therapies like naturopathy, yoga, and salt therapy are all integral to the experience. Less conventional treatments like ice baths and float pods add a unique touch to the wellness journey.

Even those who do nothing more than tuck into the hummus and avo toast with feta, dukkah and balsamic glaze at Davaar’s onsite cafe will walk away feeling healthier!

Fabulous Wineries

Naturally, no trip to Adelaide would be complete without a visit to a winery. And, whether you opt for those in the Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley or McLaren Vale, you will be spoilt for choice. However, for a truly boutique approach to your bubbles, make a booking at Silent Noise Wine at McLaren Flat.

Led by winemaker Charlie O’Brien, it offers a small-batch tasting experience that highlights McLaren Vale’s terroir. Alongside the winery’s commitment to social responsibility.

The name Silent Noise reflects Charlie’s background. And, the chaos of growing up surrounded by the vibrant activity of a family winery and neighbouring vineyard. As a young boy, Charlie was captivated by the constant hum of tractors, trucks, and machinery during vintage. A soundtrack that sparked his lifelong passion for winemaking. By the age of three, he was already topping barrels and using a toddler-sized plunger, immersing himself in the winemaking process from a remarkably early age. Ask to see pics of a curly-red-headed young Charlie and spot the resemblance as proof!

In addition to friendly hugs from Dave (the fluffy on-site guard dog) one of the highlights of Silent Noise Wine is their SGZ, a superb blend of Shiraz, Grenache, and Zinfandel. This wine boasts a captivating purple hue and complex flavours of blackcurrants, preserved cherries, plums, and dark red roses. On the palate, expect notes of blueberries, blackberries, and juniper. With silky tannins and hints of milk chocolate and T2 Rose Tea to finish.

Silent Noise Wine’s commitment extends beyond the bubbles. Charlie has partnered with Taboo Period Products, a brand dedicated to combating period poverty through the sale of 100% organic cotton pads and tampons. Since their collaboration began, Charlie has pledged $2 from each case of his wines sold to Taboo. As well as exemplifying Charlie’s generosity and dedication to social causes, this partnership supports Taboo’s mission of providing sustainable menstrual health and education projects worldwide.

Balance your sips with some snacks (or something a little more satisfying!), by booking a leisurely lunch at nearby Harry’s Deli at Wirra Wirra. A legacy of beloved local character Harry Kilaitis – a gifted carpenter whose craftsmanship left a lasting mark on the region – this elegant yet easygoing eatery is so much more than the cold meats its name suggests.

Instead, it offers a delightful dining experience with panoramic views of manicured lawns, native gum trees, and organically grown vineyards. The menu, crafted by Chef Tom Boden, features contemporary Australian cuisine inspired by local produce and paired with Wirra Wirra’s elegant wines. A highlight is the “What Harry Would Have” sharing menu. Which pays homage to the local legend with dishes designed for sharing and enjoyment. Highlights include delicate kingfish sashimi, succulent roasted lamb shoulder, and crispy fried Brussels sprouts topped with creme fraiche, anchovies, and Pecorino cheese.

With its seasonal spread, picturesque setting, and heartfelt homage to Harry – captured in a charcoal portrait by Adelaide artist Jen Wright (complete with a Wirra Wirra cap, coffee in hand, and a cigarette dangling from his lips) – Harry’s Deli provides a memorable dining experience that embodies the warm spirit of both the man and the McLaren Vale space he built with his bare hands.

Unforgettable festivals

Finally, South Australia is renowned as the festival state. So, it’s hardly surprising that its capital boasts a vibrant calendar of cultural events, on almost any given weekend. Although the Fringe Festival may be the most famous, there are plenty of year-round events to enjoy. Including the recently wrapped-up Illuminate. Where highlights among the literal lights included the Fire Gardens at the Royal Botanic Garden. And, the upcoming Adelaide Film Festival (23 October – 3 November). Which will feature a curated program of Australian and international films, moving image exhibitions, talks, red carpet events and more.

Whether you’re a music, literature or food and wine buff, be sure to check local listings like Festival City Adelaide for the latest events during your visit.
