With an introduction from Daniel Rojas, an admirable composer and lecturer of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, SLAFF will be screening two great short films which explore the history, personality and artistic contribution of “La Violeta” – Chilean composer, songwriter and visual artist.

Considered as a pioneer of the “new song” movement and registered as the first Latin American exhibitor at the Louvre museum, Violeta Parra is an admirable character and remarkable ambassador of the Latin American culture. Being “Gracias a la Vida” her most famous song.

The screenings trace an amazing journey that brings the viewer closer to Violeta’s inspirational resilience. Once she wielded a guitar she felt for the first time a silence in her grief, a space for the good cause, a moment of clear mind. The woman found calmness. Art found Violeta.

Violeta mas Viva que Nunca was 10 years in its making, collecting the memories of the people who knew her best. Alejandro Jodorowsky, Gonzalo Rojas and Lalo Parra remember her genius, work and passions.

Cantar con Sentido a touching animation in stop-motion, tells Violeta’s story while also shows the lifestyle and challenges that all the Latin America region shares.
After the screenings, public will be delighted with a live performance from Lily Guerrero, musician, songwriter and member of the award-winning Show Band Salza Kingz. Playing guitar, charango and cajon, Lily will be sharing her unique folkloric expression to the wonderful songs Violeta left us. As Lily says ‘music is a journey, and everyone’s invited!’

“Join us for a night celebrating the one and only folk legend Violeta Parra”.
