In a world of fast fashion, there are other options to investing in fashion rather than handbags and shoes.

Fashion enthusiasts will adore these chic designs – each have been inspired by Louis Vuitton and Chanel- Parisian’s signature fashion stalwarts.

British pop artist Alan Walsh provides top 7 tips when investing in your first piece of art.

TIP 1: Is it an original?

If you’re purchasing a piece with a high price tag, make sure you do your research. Apps and online digital platforms make it easy to reproduce art. Try to purchase from the artist, an official art dealer or do online research and read online reviews.

TIP 2: Does it make you feel something?

For me, if you connect with a piece and you want to have it on your wall- then it’s a good sign. Some of my favourite pieces that I own are not expensive but they hold great memories, that’s what makes them priceless. As long as it evokes a feeling, then I think you’re on the right track. You want something you can love and stare at for many years to come.

TIP 3: Does it suit your aesthetic?

I’m quite an impulsive buyer when it comes to art. I’ll often bring a purchase home and wake up the next day wondering which room I’m going to put it in. If art is the last thing to be chosen for the room, draw inspiration from colours already featured in the space. You may have navy, yellow and aqua tones in your rug and cushions, which can then translate into a colour palette for your art.

TIP 4: A budget will help you define your limits.

Set a budget and be prepared to spend a little more because you need to take into consideration, Framing shipping and insurance. On that note, just because it’s expensive doesn’t mean it’s good!

TIP 5: Is it timeless?

It’s common for art, design and fashion to be forgotten about after a season. I think there is a lot of ‘fast art’ around at the moment which is designed to come and go, but won’t stand the test of time. For me it’s important that you invest in something you love and a piece you won’t end up regretting in a few months’ time. Look at iconic works like Andy Warhol’s ‘Mick Jagger’, works like this are as cool now as they were 60 years ago.

TIP 6: Size does matter.

You want to be sure that the piece fits in your apartment or home. Determine which wall space you want to utilise before you buy so that the piece will help frame the space.

TIP 7: At the end of the day, feel confident knowing you can’t get it wrong.

Art is about attraction and natural instinct. The beauty is in the eye of the beholder, there is no right or wrong.
