Nine Gorgeous Wedding Dress Trends

Top Wedding Dress Trends

  1. Personalise Your Look

Break the cookie-cutter-bride mould and swan down that aisle in style, as 2014 is the year for brides to ‘personalise’ their look, explains Henry. “There isn’t necessarily a predominant dress ‘shape’, but rather a broad cross-section from ball gowns and A-line to fit-and-flare and straight sheaths. It’s an exciting time for brides as individuality, rather than protocol, rules the day.”

Ruffle some feathers! ‘Nannette’ fitted-to-flare lace and flounced skirt, $2200, Michelle Roth.

2. Get Creative With Fabrics

This year dresses will feature texture, draping and pin-tucking. “Sculptured fabric takes over from the predominance of ‘bling’,” forecasts Henry. “Where ‘sparkle’ is featured, it is in a far more delicate, subtle, vintage style.”

3. Create Shape with a Flattering Neckline

Don’t be limited by simple horizontal necklines, create cleavage and shape! “Strapless styles no longer have a stranglehold,” explains Henry. “V-necklines, as well as dramatic, deep V-necklines and backlines, portrait and sweetheart necklines create greater sophistication and chic.”

4. Go Easy on the Layers…

“Fabrications are getting lighter as brides choose to celebrate their wedding outdoors or as a destination wedding,” explains Henry. Who wants to jam a ball gown into a suitcase? Thought so… “Less weight, less bouff, and a swing to more lightweight fabrics such as tulle, chiffon, organza and the new generation lightweight satin dominate.”

5. Choose One Style (not five)…

Do you really want a bridal theme that is vintage-glam-rock-pink? You’ll put your guests’ and the groom’s into a head spin! Sometimes less really is more, so don’t go OTT. “The new nod to confidence is utilising one signature accessory, which is dominant, and then walking away!” explains Henry.

Top Bridal Headwear Trends: Be ahead of the curve!

1. Get Veiled!

Veils are trending in 2014 with the return to ‘fingertip’ (veil reaches fingertip length) and ‘chapel’ length (veil is just past the train), according to Henry. “Classic tradition is being seen in subtle length veils.”

2. Go easy on the bling

“Tiaras and over-ornate headpieces are out!” explains Henry. “In their place are bejewelled clips, hair jewellery and wonderful necklaces.”

3. Try a fascinating look

“Fascinators had a huge upswing in 2012-2013, but now we’re seeing more classic use of veiling,” explains Henry. “Yes, fascinators but it’s more about the classic one or two tier veil or ‘waterfall’ (tiered) veil, right now.”

4. Be comfortable in what you choose

“The new rule, whether it’s your gown, veil, headpiece, jewellery or accessory, is this – brides are choosing style they’re comfortable with,” advises Henry. “They want a look that represents who they are and therefore, the rules have been moved to one side and in its place, style sizzles because Brides own their own look.”
