Within the next few weeks a new weird and wonderful breed of strawberries are going to be imported into Australia by United Nurseries.
If you like the flavours of pineapple and bubblegum then you will love these new variations of strawberries. Imagine all the new dessert recipes that will hit the Internet. We will all be making Pineberry muffins and Bubbleberry pavlova in no time.
Phillip Nielson, who is importing these new brands of strawberry to Australia, first discovered them when he visited Europe five years ago. According to Nielson the Pineberry still tastes like a strawberry but has a more citrus taste to it similar to that of a pineapple and the Bubbleberry is an older variety of strawberry, which contains a higher content of sugar that gives it its bubblegum like flavour.
The Pineberry has apparently been quite popular due to its interesting appearance. It’s white flesh and red dots make it look a bit like an inside out strawberry. However, many may be wondering whether these exotic flavoured strawberries are genetically modified? The answer to that is no. They are in fact a breed of strawberry; they have just been selected and crossbred over a period of years. For instance a slightly more citrus flavoured variety would be selected and crossed with a variety that was whiter in colour until years later they achieved the desired result.
These tastebud-tantalizing berries will be available from hardware stores such as Bunnings in the next few weeks. So if you fancy growing yourself a Pineberry or Bubbleberry bush in your back garden then get stocked up and start getting them ready for your summer Pineberry daiquiris or Bubbleberry pies.
