Highly respected GP Dr Ginni Mansberg explains the difference between unhealthy and brittle hair, and identifying more serious hair loss conditions, which can lead to balding, as well as the causes and solutions.

Dr Ginni says: “One of the most incredibly common things I see in my surgery is hair loss. Women are embarrassed about it. They think they are the only ones, let me tell you you are not alone it is super common.

“How do you know if you have hair loss? Top tips number one, if you think you have hair loss, I’m telling you, you do. By the time you notice it, we are years down the track and you’ve probably lost far more hair than you’d realised. Top Tip number two. What type of hair loss do you have? Do something called the tug test. You basically pull your hair and see what comes out or have a look at the drown inside the shower cubicle which is where most people lose all their hair. If the hair has roots on it that’s where it’s coming out, if your hair is brittle we are probably looking at the usual culprits. These are hair dryers, hair straighteners, hair curlers, hair dye. All the things that put a lot of stress on your hair.

“So what do you do? When you wash it, don’t vigorously towel dry it. Just gently dry it. Try to avoid your hair straighteners and hair dryers when you can. Use a really good conditioner and a decent leave in conditioner because that will just help the hair breakage. But if it is coming out at the root and for most of us that is the problem, you really need to see your GP.”
