Stay Fit And Active To Enhance Your Brain And Body

From my experience in the field of lifestyle medicine and as a TCM practitioner, the foundation for healthy ageing begins with keeping an active lifestyle which includes a minimum of 30 minutes of daily walking or some other form of fitness routine that increases circulation, respiration, oxygenation, and elimination.  Of course, this is a minimum guideline which can be built upon to include stretching, strength training, and more intensive fitness routines as well as softer styles such as yoga and qi gong.  The benefits are not only physical such as enhancing brain and organ functions in the body, but also emotional & psychological balance and wellbeing, and it is the pillar to any stress management program.

Eat A Nutritious Diet To Boost Your Metabolism

A well-designed nutrition program that increases foods that promote healthy metabolism and vital body functions without adding a burden to our metabolism while eliminating or reducing foods and beverages that are known to be detrimental to our health is critical.  Food can be our greatest ally in support of healthy ageing or it can be a huge burden. Top on this list is to eliminate refined sugars which are so widely available, cut down animal product foods to a minimum, increase fresh vegetables, fruits, grains and legumes to a maximum, and avoid chemical additives as much as possible.

Start To Meditate Daily And Enjoy Contemplation

Most of us are busy with so much activity, productivity, stimulation and the fast pace of life that it becomes more and more difficult to discern the truly important elements in our lives, the ones that are essential to our humanity, to the purpose of our lives and what is truly most fulfilling at different stages of our lives.  Developing a daily meditation practice, a time to be with ourselves in a quiet, non ‘doing’ way, a contemplation within is perhaps one of the most important aspects for living a truly fulfilling life over the course of a lifetime.  The health impact is immense but perhaps most importantly, we become more fully who we are meant to be in the process.

Share Life’s Joys With Friends And Family

Establish and nurture a healthy social circle of close family, friends, colleagues with which to enjoy personal time, sharing life’s joys, triumphs, celebrations, and at times, sorrows and difficulties.  We are by nature social creatures and spending time with loved ones can add a quality to our lives that is impossible to overestimate, as well as adding years to our lives.

Surround Yourself In Nature’s Beauty

Spend time in nature surrounded by the natural beauty that exists all around us and of which we are a part.  The healing power of nature is an essential component is so many of the world’s ancient healing traditions and when we immerse ourselves in nature; it is effortless to experience just how rebalancing, recharging, and uplifted we begin to feel.  It is one of our most precious resources we need only connect with to experience its gifts.
