Styling Tricks To Create A Super Stylish & Contemporary Home

Interior designer Romy Danker has her finger on the home styling pulse. The well-respected stylist has recently launched Homeroom Studio, the ‘home’ to a great stable of artists’ who can connect directly with consumers to sell their work including photography, paintings, textiles and contemporary art. In part two of Romy’s interior styling series, she shares her home styling tips to create a contemporary home using colour, soft furnishings and design elements.

Best Rooms To Focus On: You don’t need to revamp every room in the house immediately – start small, and be selective. “If you naturally favour something a little crisper, cleaner and minimalist, try to contemporise the primary living areas of the home – the kitchen, lounge room and living room,” suggests Romy. “Don’t get into a spin – I always suggest extending themes to the laundry as they are more often than not overlooked and should consciously considered when styling the home.”

If you want wow sophistication, Romy suggests going big. “For something outrageously contemporary, appoint one wall of the room with something that’s oversized and out of the ordinary. For a little chic-steam apply a large mirror to the wall where the bath and shower are. Not only will this elongate the length of the room but it’s so out of the ordinary and help you reflect.”

Great Colours: “Be ‘light-minded’ when it comes to colour application,” suggests Romy. “Neutral colours such as soft white walls, Dove Grey, Dusty Pink (my fave!) and warm stone colours such as taupe can be effortlessly mixed with dramatic colours, black and cream. These delicate and demure shades will give your room more longevity and resist the ageing process so you can effortlessly change your décor.”

Laelie Berzon paintings that pop.

Decorate It: “For the perfect sofa or armchair, jump onto Jardan or cruise into CULT. Laelie Berzon is an all-time fave of mine, which is fun and poppy but still has an air of sophistication. Or check out Mitch Gobel resin art – the recently released limited prints are accessible for design-enthusiasts who don’t have a deep budget.”
