Brisbane mum Julia Baker has rewritten the book on the power of positive thinking.

Less than a decade back she was in a job she loathed as a pastry chef and a relationship that was going nowhere.

Today, she is married to the man of her dreams, has turned her passion into a career, and is the star of an international hit reality show called Snake Boss, which has just kicked off its second season in Australia on Animal Planet.

The Carousel caught up with the irrepressible motor-bike riding Brit to find out the secrets to her incredible success.

Congrats Julia on the show. It was four years ago now I was standing in your house and you were convinced it was going to happen, it was only a matter of time. Did you ever have any doubts?

I was convinced my show would happen because I could see it in my head and I knew I had all the ingredients for a great series that viewers would enjoy with a truck load of passion and a strong objective to help our wildlife.

I don’t really have doubts about my ideas as once the confidence kicks in that stems from useful feedback (as from yourself that time!) and my intuition – there simply is no way I’m not going to make it happen.

It’s just a matter of finding a way. I might change things but I never give up.

You talk about the power of the subconscious brain and that we all have a frequency out there that we can all tap into. Any tips?

Yes – read books! Lots of them, there are some very good books written about the Law of attraction and there’s more and more evidence appearing now that this universal law does exist. We are all made of energy and our thoughts and emotions create a very strong vibration that will attract alike.

I do up a goal list every year with pictures and stick it on my fridge. I visualise myself celebrating as I’ve accomplished these goals. The trick is not to get caught up worrying about how you’re going to achieve them but simply imagine yourself already there and get excited!!

This becomes the blue print for your sub-conscious brain and you will find yourself coming up with incredible ideas and noticing opportunities that will make these goals happen if you act on them.

You even managed to conjure up a handsome Scot with the power of your mind! Tell us more!

Julia also found love

I started writing bucket lists after my divorce eight years ago and I’ve always had a great imagination which served me well as a lot of the things on my list such as a buying a side-car for my motorbike with only $1500 in the bank or meeting my dream partner seemed impossible to achieve in the real world….so I did what I do best and that is to write down and visualize exactly what I wanted and imagine myself already having achieved it.

In John’s case I had pretty much given up meeting my ideal partner, but I still wanted to give it one last try so I wrote a long list of what I believe to be compatible with myself.

Things that are important to me like passionate, spontaneous, responsible, open minded but also the looks and nationality etc.

And I like Scottish so I put that down (never actually believed it would happen) and two weeks later I met John Gallacher who is everything on my list and my absolute soul mate!

In the meantime, I’ve met lots of women who have done the same and met theirs.

So many times, we settle for second best and compromise ourselves but if we would just have a think about what we want and write it down – the chances are very good it’ll happen as we now also have a focus.

You changed tack in life at a relatively later age than many. Was that a scary thing to do?

Yes, it was and still is scary!

Sometimes even terrifying and I won’t kid you – my life is now a rollercoaster of emotions as I continue to step out of my comfort zone and throw myself into new ideas and adventures. But the rewards are amazing and nothing feels as good as self-achievements.

Plus, when you’re happy with your own self you have more to give to others.

The only thing you risk losing if your dream didn’t work out – is really your ego.

I see my life as an adventure book and I have a burning desire to fill it up with as many stories as possible!

If things go wrong – they make for great funny stories.

I would rather spend my life chasing dreams, even at the risk that they might not happen,

then stay in my comfort zone and have regrets at the end of it.

Life is all about exploring and finding out what we’re good at and what we love doing. How are we going to find that by being scared to try new things?

I dread to think how many people with hidden talents & gifts are out there who have no idea because of their fear of failing.

I believe everybody has a purpose and an incredible gift doing something but for most it’s not obvious so without giving things a go – how will they know?

I’ve tried loads of things from stand-up comedy to Shakespeare acting – and I wasn’t much good at a lot of them…it’s no big deal.

Your turning point was the connection you felt with a snake at Australia Zoo?

Julia turned her life around at the Australia Zoo

I never really thought about snakes until I saw one at Australia Zoo about 12 years ago. I’ve always loved all animals and I certainly didn’t fear snakes so I wanted my picture taken with the Burmese Python.

As I’m standing in the queue it baffled me that so many others were showing signs of disgust or fear as all I could see was an amazingly beautiful creature laying there that didn’t want to hurt anyone.

And then they wrapped him around my shoulders and I remember my eyes filling up with tears out of love and empathy for him.

I feel like I have a connection with snakes – just like them I often felt misunderstood and judged.

They deserve to live; they play a very important part in our eco-system and they are not evil or monsters.

Any one of us could have been born a snake instead of a human.

What was it like filming the first season of Snake Boss and what can we expect from season two?

It was amazing and surreal at the same time!

I was so ready for it because I had been dreaming about this show for a while.

The only surprise was that almost every day we filmed – the most incredible call outs came through!

And even more great characters and story lines….this show was simply meant to be!

Season 2 is even better because we covered more species, had lots of white knuckle catches and heartwarming rescue stories!

Oh, and it’s funny!!!

What’s your advice to readers how may have need of your professional services this summer?

Don’t panic! Most snakes encountered are harmless and even the venomous ones rather flee than use their venom on humans.

Keep a snake catcher’s number handy but always try and get a photo first as snakes are fast and often get away, so it’s peace of mind if we can ID the species for you.

Keep your pets out of the garden if there’s a snake there and should the snake be identified as harmless – just let him pass through.

What’s next on that List you have pinned to the fridge? Graham Norton show?

Lol….you know that me being a guest on the Graham Norton show has been on my goal list for a few years now!

And it will stay on my list until I’ve achieved it!

In the meantime I want a Snake Boss season 3 of course, do some speaking gigs overseas as I’m also a motivational speaker, build more of my business, become a Harley Davidson ambassador,

Write some books and do at least 50 live reptile shows.

And that’s just for this year!
