Where’s Daniel Morcombe? is expected to attract some of Australia’s leading actors in a bid to play Bruce and Denise Morcombe in a feature film about the chilling disappearance and murder of  son Daniel in 2003. The film, which kicks off production next year, hopes to bring back into the spotlight child safety issues, raise awareness and also inspire others who face adversity like the Morcombes have over the past 12years.

The honour has been handed to Aussie Director Peter Cousens to retell the shocking story of the Sunshine Coast schoolboy’s abduction and murder, his family’s relentless quest for the truth and the elaborate investigative operation that eventually caught his killer, serial child sex offender Brett Peter Cowan.

The news was announced by Daniel’s parents at a charity dinner in Brisbane in front of 570 including the Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

At a media conference, Bruce Morcombe drew attention to the fact that this was not a documentary, but a feature film aimed at raising awareness of child safety issues and to offer inspiration to other families who have faced this kind of devastation. He said, “It’s not a fairytale … it is the journey of Daniel, for the Morcombe family. There will be difficult times to run through that but that’s what we want. We want to draw on the emotion of the viewer but have a great outcome at the end of it. I have no doubt that for people close to Daniel – particularly his family, the school friends – they will find it difficult at times to watch that, but that’s what you would expect.”

Where’s Daniel?

A Heritage Films production, Where’s Daniel? (the working title) is drawing financial support from government grants and private equity of between $5million – $10million to attract some of the finest actors.

Release is likely to be 2017-18.
