Matt Moran uses an experiment involved placing a raw lamb loin in a car that had been parked at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on a scorching hot day.

As you can see in the disturbing video below, the piece of meat cooked all the way through in just over 90 minutes, reaching a temperature up of 75 degrees.

Matt Moran set up for a cooking demonstration. A parked car near by.

Onlookers, who were initially taken for a ride when Matt advertised a ‘new unconventional oven’ demonstration, were shocked to learn exactly what that oven was.

And the meat, according to Matt: “overcooked”.

Matt’s demonstration was carried out in conjunction with the Australian children’s injury prevention charity, Kidsafe, in order to show parents how the family car could easily become a deadly oven in the heat – even in a short period of time.

As Kidsafe spokeswoman Kellie Wilson stressed that “75 per cent of the temperature rise occurs within the first five minutes of parking the car and 90 per cent within 15 minutes.”

Research has also found the conditions inside a parked car can be 20 to 30 degrees hotter than the outside temperature.

Ideal for slow-cooking meat, but highly dangerous for little ones.

It’s estimated that 5000 children are rescued from hot cars a year in Australia.  A statistic that Matt is “absolutely gobsmacked” by.

And children are particularly at risk because they can lose fluid quickly, becoming dehydrated and increasing their risk of suffering a life threatening heatstroke.

“I want to support this cause to help Kidsafe get the message out – that leaving children in cars should be as unthinkable as leaving them in an oven,” adds Matt.
