Voted one of Hollywood’s top 25 most powerful stylists, Johnny Wujek is creative consultant on America’s Next Top Model, the man behind Kim Kardashian and BFF’s with none other than Katy Perry.
In Australia last week for the launch of Optic White’s “BFF Effect”, we sat down with Johnny and talked all things celebrity and fashion rules that are made to be broken.
How did you become besties with Katy Perry?
We met at a house party one night and she actually hit on me! She came up to me and pulled out the moves before I had to let her down. We got to talking about how she was in music and I was in fashion and then one day she hit me up to help style her and we’ve been best friends ever since.
Is she very collaborative when it comes to designing her costumes or are you given free reign?
It’s definitely a collaborative relationship. I mean, I will have my ideas and she will have hers and they’re always coming together and feeding off each other to create something great.
Kim K’s style evolution. Can you talk me through it…
She’s been put into check ever since she started dating Kanye. He has really helped her to hone in on her style and it’s definitely brought her into the fashion world in a more serious way. People don’t dismiss what she’s wearing anymore. It’s definitely all been Kanye though.
Which celebrity’s style do you most covet?
I love Diane Kruger and Blake Lively who both style themselves and have such fantastic looks. I also think Rihanna is amazing. I just love her diversity and the way she can always pull it together.
A fashion rule that should never be broken…
In fashion there are no rules! At this point anything goes as long as you don’t look like a fool and rock it with a confident smile.
What are your top five fashion rules?
1. Have a bold, complimentary handbag
2. Always be aware of your body shape and dress to it
3. Make sure you dress to match your skin tone
4. A confident white smile is the perfect accessory to any outfit
5. Don’t be afraid to stand out – it’s better than blending in
What’s your must have buy for the new season?
An oversized trench coat or colourful chunky knit
A fashion rule that should be broken…
No white after Labour Day! It’s silly, and white is good to wear any time.
A typical day in your life looks like…
There really is no typical day. The thing I love about my job is that it’s unpredictable. One day I can be on set styling a photo shoot or music video, the next day I could be running around town pulling looks together, and then the day after that I’m in Australia launching the BFF Effect for Colgate Optic White – a very unpredictable job, which I love!
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I see myself doing a lot more directing, producing and more on TV in general. I’d like to become more of a TV personality, more of a creative director really honing in on everything I’ve always wanted do. It’s the perfect outlet for what I like to do.
Has fashion always been what drives you?
I wouldn’t say fashion drives me, I think I am just constantly driven to keep topping myself. I’m always competing with myself to do better, to do more and have an impact on more people. I strive to utilise who I am and my career to help other people like I do on my TV show SOS (featured on Johnnywujek.com).
