Is Skinification of Hair the Biggest Beauty Trend of 2024? An Expert Weighs In

The skinification of hair is a concept that blurs the lines between hair care and skin care. But, is this TikTok Trend woth the hype? Here’s what Trichologist Chelcey Salinger thinks …

What does the skinifcation of hair actually mean?

Traditionally, hair care has focused primarily on cleansing, conditioning and styling the hair strands. However, the skinification trend takes inspiration from skin care by treating hair health holistically and emphasising scalp health as the foundation for beautiful tresses.

It encourages practices such as gentle exfoliation of the scalp to remove buildup, the use of serums and essences formulated with active ingredients like hyaluronic acid or peptides to nourish and hydrate the scalp, and even facial-like masks designed to rejuvenate the skin on the scalp. Just as skin care routines have become increasingly sophisticated and personalised, so too are these new hair care rituals aiming to treat the scalp with the same care as the face.

So, do you really need skin care inspired solutions for your scalp?

According to Chelcey, “Poor scalp health generally leads to inflammation, and this is the means by which it affects hair growth.  The scalp microbiome (an ecosystem on our scalp that includes yeast and bacteria) also influences scalp health. When it is out of balance it can result in dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, folliculitis and inflammation.”

This shift in focus recognises that a healthy scalp is crucial to nurture strong, vibrant hair. And, as a result, Chelcey highlights specific scalp conditions that benefit from skin care inspired treatments: “Antioxidants help reduce inflammation, hyaluronic acid can hydrate, while salicylic and lactic acids combat flakiness and scale.”

One of Chelcey’s recommendations is the Neutriderm Hair Enhancer Range. Which includes a lotion made with Saw Palmetto, Salicylic Acid and Hyaluronic Acid (among a few) to aid with hair growth and hair health.

This approach not only addresses common issues like dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis but also undoubtedly promotes overall scalp balance and health.

Another tip is to treat your skin (yes, even the one on your scalp!) from within, a diet rich in vitamins and minerals. A super supplement, such as Hair Food, by Caruso’s can support hair growth and scalp health, while also promoting collagen formation for skin integrity and structure.

However, while embracing skin care principles in hair care can yield impressive results, Salinger advises caution. “If the routine gets too complicated, there’s certainly a risk of extending periods between washes, which can harm scalp health.” Personalised advice from a trichologist ensures optimal care tailored to individual scalp needs. This can prevent misconceptions and making mistake – like confusing an oily scalp for a dry one. And, generally lead to better hair health as a result.
