How To Make a 'Sleeping Beauty' Cake: Every Little Girl's Favourite
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Disney’s Sleeping Beauty is one of the all-time classics. And for those who love cooking princess cakes, I’m going to show you how to make an Aurora Princess cake from this beautiful movie.

I’ve updated the classic ‘dolly varden’ style of cake that’s been around for generations and added my own flair with a beautiful Ombre layered effect inside the cake.

If you haven’t heard of Ombre before, it’s a graduation of the same colour in varying shades. Today, I chose pink, but you could easily switch the colour scheme and doll to suit your Princess of choice.

To recreate this cake, you’ll need the following items:

  • Metal bowl
  • 8″ cake tin lined with baking paper
  • Aurora princess doll (try to get the one with plastic bodice / clothing)
  • Serrated knife
  • Offset spatula
  • Spatula
  • Disposable piping bag
  • Open round piping tip (any size will do)
  • Scissors
  • Circle cookie cutter (approx 5cm / 2″)
  • 12″ cake board
  • 8″ cake board
  • 1 piece glitter pink scrapbooking paper
  • Non toxic craft glue
  • Buttercream frosting (get my recipe here)
  • Pink food colouring
  • White food colouring (if using vanilla cake – not required if using white cake)
  • Vanilla / white cake batter – I used a triple batch of standard vanilla cake mix – enough to make around 40 cupcakes or 3 x 8″ round cakes

Once the cake is completed, store it at room temperature for up to 48 hours. I never refrigerate my cakes as it causes the frosting to set too hard and the sponge inside to dry out. Buttercream is fine at room temperature for up to four days, but two is best to ensure a moist delicious cake.
