The Carousel’s health expert Jaymes Gleeson talks exclusively to the esteemed TV presenter and author Dr Michael Mosley about why intermittent fasting really works.
Five years ago Dr Michael Mosley started a health revolution with The Fast Diet, introducing the world to the incredible power of intermittent fasting. Speaking about his journey to The Fast 800, Dr Mosley says: “It started with realising that the low fat diet wasn’t really the way to go and that a diet with healthy fats and a decent amount of high quality protein is much healthier and more satisfying.
“I then moved into eating legumes. Today I eat much less white and brown rice and much more lentils. I then realised if you’re going to lose weight and need to lose a significant amount like I did back in 2012, then you’re going to have to do something a bit drastic, not simply making minor modifications to your diet.
“And that led me to the benefits of rapid weight loss and that in turn led me to the Fast 800. On top of that I include exercise, particularly high intensity training. Short bursts of intensive exercise can be hugely beneficial so if you’re going out for a walk, go brisk and push yourself a bit. And also the role of breathing for managing anxiety and helping you sleep. All of these things have evolved over time and I incorporated them all into the Fast 800 approach. So it’s a multi-dimensional approach based initially around rapid weight loss but at it’s heart having the mediterranean-style diet.”
So what would you say to those people struggling to lose weight?
“This approach completely does work, this has been the subject of numerous randomised controlled trials and people are able to lose weight and keep it off in the long term following this approach,” says Dr Mosley. “We know from studies, people lost an average of 10kgs and even after 3 years they were still 7kg down and thats life changing. Even if you lose 3kg, that can have significant benefits to your health, it will improve your sleep, it will decrease your risk of developing diabetes and heart disease. Even quite modest weight loss can have big changes to your life, so do it, do it now. Most of us have a lot of years to live and we want those years to be healthy.”
