What you’ll need…

  • Aveda Pure Abundance Style Prep
  • Aveda Smooth Infusion Nourishing Style Creme
  • Aveda Air Control Hair Spray
  • Hairdryer
  • Elastic bands
  • Bobby pins

Step 1 – Prep hair with Aveda Pure Abundance Style Prep for volume. Blow dry back into a ponytail direction that will sit just below the center of the head.

Step 2 – Pull hair into a ponytail and secure tightly with an elastic tie wrapped three times around base of the pony to help set it away from head.

Step 3 – Using a coin-size amount of Aveda Smooth Infusion Nourishing Style Creme in the palm of the hands, smooth over the pony from elastic to ends.

Step 4 – Take a small section of hair from under the pony to wrap hair around the base hiding the elastic and secure with pins.

Step 5 – Divide the ponytail into two even sections. Begin to tightly twist both sections clockwise to the ends while simultaneously twisting the two sections together going counterclockwise. Secure with an elastic at the end.

Step 6 – With a smaller coin-sized amount of Aveda Smooth Infusion Nourishing Style Creme in hands, gently smooth over rope braid and the sides and top of head to eliminate flyaways.

Step 7 – To set, spray the style with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray.

“We’re doing a really strong look today at Public School, based on Sade’s hair in Smooth Operator,” said Allen Ruiz, Aveda Global Artistic Director for Hair Styling.

“The designers, Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow, simply showed us a picture of it because they loved the strong lines in the style. They described the girl who wears this look as a ‘traveler’ – someone who travels to big cities and she just grabs her hair and does the style herself.”

“The designers loved the models’ natural looks, so we’re not using extensions or anything. There’s a girl who has a choppy modern day shag, and another with a bob… we’re just going to give them a strong look, as the designers specifically chose them for their individuality.”

These looks came from a previous New York Fashion Week show.
