Two Sydney icons teamed up yet again for another spectacular start to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.
With a head-spinning array of celebrities in attendance, New York-based local legend Dion Lee kicked off the celebrations by unveiling his 2018 Resort collection at one of his favourite venues, the Sydney Opera House.
“I first visited the Opera House as a child to see theatre and contemporary dance and I have been a regular ever since,” Dion told Daily Mail Australia.
“The Opera House is a place that I’ve consistently looked to for creative inspiration.”
It was Dion’s fourth showing at the iconic venue, having debuted there in 2009, before following up in 2011 and again three years later.
His influence was reflected in the looks of the celebrities, many of whom turned up in new season Dion Lee.
“Tailoring has always been a strong focus for me – especially with this collaboration,” added Dion in advance of his Resort ’18 launch.
“For me this collection is really about primary colours, open weave fabrics, fabrics that breathe, elements of transparency and a sense of athleticism that strikes a chord with the lifestyle here in Australia.”
Highlights in the new collection included tailored blazers rocked with no pants, deconstructed blue and red hats and asymmetrical dresses and knitwear – all of which perfectly reflected Dion Lee’s typically offbeat design, say reports.
The show also featured menswear for the first time and opened with a focus on suits and structured tailoring.
While Dion used the Opera House as his dramatic backdrop, most of the fashion week shows will be held at Carriageworks in Redfern, Sydney with the Icebergs at Bondi and the Andrew Boy Charlton Pool in the Domain also gearing up as venues.
