There’s pretty much not a single day in the week where our busy family of four is not pounding the pavement. So comfort and style must go hand in hand with all of us. And that was the challenge put to us – pick your favourite shoes from Hush Puppies Autumn/Winter 2018 range and road test them.
My husband Jonathan and our two sons Michael and James were the perfect team to give a good workout to a new pair of shoes as we all lead pretty varied lives but the one thing that unites us is we walk a lot during the day.
What we all loved about the boots and shoes we picked is that they came with a stamp of approval from the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) because as anyone knows happy feet means a happy life. Below is how we rated our shoes:
Businessman Jo Townsend, 57, from Sydney, selected the Cale men’s shoe in black. His verdict:
Smart and sleek, the Cale fit like a glove from the moment I wore them. But I wasn’t sure if they were going to hold out at our gruelling 12 hour day at an annual trade show. Fortunately, they did. That’s because the leather is supple enough and there is solid support for the foot. What I liked was that the shoe has been approved by the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA), which is comforting to know. As a man, I don’t have a huge range of shoes so I require them to be versatile and for business, it’s important that they look smart and professional. So for me, the Cale shoes ticked all those boxes.

Business owner and publisher Robyn Foyster, from Sydney, chose a pair of Capital shoes in black. Her verdict:
Okay, so I have an admission. Well, two in fact. First I’m an Imelda Marcos when it comes to shoes. I keep them neat and tidy in boxes and when I’m on the shoe hunt, if they really take a fancy to a particular style, I have been known to buy three or four in different colours. My second revelation is that I recently developed a common foot condition called Plantar Fasciitis. It’s a painful condition involving tissue damage at the attachment of the plantar fascia to the underside of the heel bone.
Sadly, it is more common with ageing as muscles supporting the arch of the foot become weaker, putting stress on the plantar fascia. And what that means is wearing the correct shoes is essential. So, the Capital shoes, pictured, above were perfect for working in the office because they combine a classic style with a sensible heel and comfort so well. For me, I don’t want to trade off style for comfort or vice versa – I’m greedy and want both. This pair fit like a glove, looked good and didn’t need wearing in. Hallelujah!

Medical student James Townsend, 19, studying at Armidale University, chose the Terminal. Here’s what he had to say:
As a medical student, I’m on my feet all day long and I need something that looks smart but is super comfortable. I was thrilled to get my pair of Terminals as they filled the bill perfectly. Also, they were very versatile, meaning I could wear them to uni and then again in the evening. It was good to have a pair of boots in a tan colour and I really liked the feel of the leather. The first thing my dad said to me was ‘make sure you look after those boots’. It was pretty clear he had boot envy, as he was definitely eying off a pair for himself. After wearing them around town and throughout the week, they got a good road-test and I’m happy to give them a big thumbs up.
Terminal Boot, RRP $159.95. A laid-back desert boot that should be a staple in every man’s wardrobe. It features an extra wide fit, suede/leather upper with tab feature, microsuede lining and a soft outsole for added comfort. Try out the Terminal shoe, here.
Law Student and teacher Michael Townsend, 21, from Sydney, chose the black leather Chelsea boot. Here is what he had to say:
Chelsea boots are a must-have.They are incredibly versatile, comfortable and convenient. There are no other shoes that work so well with a suit that can also be worn with casual outfits. The Hush Puppies fit particularly well and so was a pleasure to walk in. As someone who’d normally wear oxfords for work and vans when out with friends, it was great to be able to have a shoe I can now use for both at my own convenience. This makes them my most practical shoes and they’d still get a 9/10 for style, so I’d recommend them to anyone looking to expand their shelf.
