Ruby Rose’s foray into short film is a powerful portrayal of the increasing fluidity of sexuality in society.
Break Free is “about gender roles, Trans(gender), and what it is like to have an identity that deviates from the status quo”, said the model and DJ of her emotive debut film which sees her transform from a buxom blonde into a brooding, chest-strapped man in a tailored suit.
The candid actress has long spoken about her sexuality and revealed earlier this year that she wanted to undergo a sex change as a child. With over 2million Facebook views, Rose’s foray into short film has been touted as semi-autobiographical and has caused quite the stir on online forums while being met with praise by her fan base.
The film kicks off with Rose dressed as a femme-fatale blonde touching up her lipstick provocatively in the mirror before reaching for a pair of scissors and randomly hacking off her long, feminine locks. She then morphs into a masculine character after scrubbing at her skin to reveal a body full of tattoos beneath, wrapping her chest in bandages to flatten her breasts and dressing with a sex toy. This provocative film, which clearly explores gender identity, closes with Rose’s masculine alter-ego dressed in a suit, smoking a cigarette and brooding at the camera.
In 2014, amongst the chaos of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Ruby Rose opened up to TheCarousel.com about body image, the story behind her most visible tattoo, why she loves her flaws, her sexuality, the importance of going without makeup and more.
