Logies Fever! 1960s & ’70s

The 1960s and ’70s set the pattern for the glamour, the glitz and the laughs that have been part of the TV Week Logie Awards every since.

The year 1959 stood out in the world of entertainment. Ben Hur was the biggest moves of the decade, The Sound of Music opened on stage and music’s Grammy Awards began. And in Australia, the TV WEEK Logie Awards made their debut. Out TV industry began only in 1956, but it was already making great strides. TV WEEK began the Logie Awards to reward its best achievements. Within the first two decades, the Logies establishes itself as “the equivalent of the Hollywood Oscars”, as TV WEEK proudly exclaimed. A tradition had begun that remains as strong a force today as ever.

Logies Shine! 1980s

The 1980s and 90’s saw the TV WEEK Logies reach new heights – Aussie TV came of age and saluted our stars to the rest of the world.

By the 1980s, Aussie TV was hitting new strides with variety offerings such as The Mike Walsh Show, The Don Lane Show and Hey Hey It’s Saturday. Dramas such as Prisoner, A Country Practice, Sons And Daughters and Neighbours were also making a splash. Daryl Somers, Ray Martin and Kylie Minogue made the industry shine anew. By the 1990s, the Logies had entered a new stratosphere. New shows and star names sprouting from Home And Away and Blue Heelers were being noticed – charting a bold new course.

Logies in the Golden Age! 2000’s

The 2000s and beyond are celebrated as the TV WEEK Logie Awards’ modern milestone. It was a great time for Aussie TV, too!

One thing was crystal-clear in the first decade of the new century: Aussie TV drama ruled at the TV WEEK Logies. Dramatic actors took out the top honour of the Gold Logie a record seven times. But it was cheeky young comic Rove McManus whose wit and boyish grin would secure Gold three times. Recent years have seen a swing back to hosts or presenters with the emergence of reality series such as The Block. Comedians Hamish Blake and Andy lee have also been a revelation.
