How To Accessorise For The Melbourne Cup

How To Accessorise For The Melbourne Cup
With the Melbourne Cup just around the corner, we asked the LA-based designer for his hottest accessories tips and to dish the gossip on his favourite clients.

Leading stylist and jewellery designer to the stars Charlie Lapson has supplied accessories for the some of the world’s most famous women including Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie. Now he’s launched his signature range exclusively in Australia on TVSN so everyone can enjoy a bit of Hollywood glamour.

With such an exclusive clientele, why did you want to do an affordable jewellery line for the everyday woman?

“I’m very aware people often can’t afford a whole new wardrobe, but you can add something special to it. For my new line I use simulated (artificial) diamonds and gems for pieces ranging from $29 to $119 which are similar to my high-end pieces selling for $40,000! It’s been very popular. One pink and white diamond ring sold out on TVSN before I could even hold it up to camera.”

What is the hottest accessories trend at the moment?

“Wearing multiple rings, a look Rihanna is known for. But don’t overdo it so you look like a clown! Go for three rings – one on your middle finger, one on your ring finger, then on your other hand, another ring on the middle.”

Right now what metals and shapes are popular?

“A lot of my rings are white gold/platinum style which is very popular followed by yellow gold. However rose gold, which was popular in the 1970s, is making a comeback. People also still love big square stones and the princess cut. And diamond stud earrings are very chic. Every woman needs diamond studs in her handbag. You never know when you might want to play dress-up after work.”

Fascinators are the key accessory for a Melbourne Cup event. Are you a fascinator fan?

“I’m fascinated by fascinators! I wish we had them in the States. To successfully wear them it depends on the event. You wouldn’t wear a crazy fascinator to a wedding, but if it’s the Melbourne Cup, or a special night out with friends, why not? Choose something fun and playful.”

What’s your fail-safe jewellery combination for cup day?

“Rings on both hands, at least one bracelet – perhaps two or three on one arm, a beautiful pair of earrings, and either a bare neckline or small pendant necklace.”

Do the old rules of matching jewellery to clothing, or taking off one accessory before leaving the house still apply?

“I don’t like rules, I try to break them. We’re now doing things differently from what Coco Chanel would have said 90 years ago. If you love a saffire ring with a blue dress, then wear it. But it doesn’t have to be matching. Why not try a yellow saffire or pink diamond with a blue dress that’d make it pop more? For a conservative occasion wear less jewellery, but for a funky event you can wear more.”

Which celebrities do you like working with?

“Sarah Jessica Parker is lovely. She became a fashion icon through Sex and the City, but in real life her look is a pared-back New York girl wearing jeans and a sweater. Jennifer Aniston’s also nice, sweet and kind. She likes very clean lines – earrings, a ring on both hands and a pendant. She’s a less-is-more girl whereas Paris Hilton is a more-is-more girl!”

You’ve also worked with Kim Kardashian?

“Yes, many times. Kim was a pretty girl with a hippy style who somehow morphed into a modern style icon. She’s not over-the-top wearing tonnes of jewellery. For the most part her choices are a hit.”

Does her hubby Kanye West really approve everything she wears?

“I don’t really think he’s her boss. Kim’s actually very independent.”

Who is your favourite?

“I love Eva Longoria. I enjoy helping people who give back to the community. She supports foundations as her sister has special needs. She’ll soon be starring in a steamy new sitcom Hot & Bothered which I’m doing all the jewellery for.”

Why is it important to accessorise?

“Women often don’t have time to take care of themselves, particularly if they’ve got kids, dogs and cats to look after. But if you put on a little lipstick, fluff your hair, and put on a ring you’ll feel special.”
