We’ve all heard of the tea bag trick, which is supposedly meant to banish puffy under eyes and putting egg whites on your face to tighten your skin. But how about putting mayonnaise on your hair as a hair mask?

Yes, this is now a thing. Many beauty bloggers on social media are applying mayonnaise as a hair mask claiming that it gives you super glossy soft hair.

What next? Vegemite face masks? As ridiculous as this latest beauty fad sounds, the mayo hair mask apparently actually works.

Here’s one of our favourite beauty bloggers trying out the mayo hair mask @farahdhukai.

Farah recommends putting the mayo straight onto dry hair so your hair soaks up more of the mayo, giving it a deeper condition.

Here’s another beauty blogger trying out the mayo hair mask, claiming that it left her with some glossy hair.

Given mayonnaise is made with mainly oil and eggs, which are full of protein, there is some method behind this madness that it will condition your hair. Note, however, it has to be full fat mayonnaise for the best results, unlike our bodies our hair actually wants to absorb the fatty oils.

However, the sound of a mayo hair mask probably doesn’t appeal to most of us because let’s face it, mayonnaise isn’t the most fragrant of condiments.

Try adding a few drops of vanilla extract to your mayo hair mask mixture before you slap it onto your head. If anything, it will make the whole experience more pleasant for you whilst you are waiting for the thirty minutes conditioning time.

We would much rather have the scent of vanilla filling our noses for half an hour  than mayonnaise, or maybe just sit next to a scented candle.

Wash out thoroughly with your favourite smelling shampoo and dry, then run your fingers through your amazingly smooth and silky hair.

You don’t need to condition afterwards because the mayo hair mask is the conditioning treatment and according to many beauty experts the reverse hair washing process is the secret to super glossy hair.  First intensely condition and then shampoo.

So there you have it, a conditioning hair mask that’s waiting for you to try in your kitchen.
