The vegan hair care brand Aveda has announced a new exclusive collaboration with global fashion brand 3.1 Phillip Lim for the 2022 holiday season.

This collection is a true celebration of the brand’s relationship to nature through its visual, colourful prints that combine the joyful colours of the holiday season with those found in the natural world. It’s centred around the idea of gifting, offering a lineup of versatile accessories and gift packaging all created with sustainability at heart.

The collection includes four limited-edition accessories—a hair scarf, shower cap, cosmetic bag, and mini paddle brush—as well as special-edition gift packaging, all featuring striking prints exclusively designed for the Aveda x 3.1 Phillip Lim holiday collection inspired by a mutual appreciation of nature.

The Carousel was lucky enough to get an interview with Phillip Lim himself and get an insight into the collection:

As a brand Phillip Lim’s mission statement is based around sustainability and to ‘make less, mean more’ and to ‘live with intention’. What’s your advice on how to do that when it comes to fashion?

From the beginning, 3.1 has always strived to find a sustainable balance in how we create products. My advice would be to continuously find ways to have a lighter footprint and use less resources. It takes innovation, imagination and finding new solutions to old challenges. There is no need to over produce, when creating you have to ask yourself, is this piece really about pure desire? Or is it one of the core items that pay the bills? Or is it just vague? If it’s in-between, you have to cut it out. You have to invest time in editing, discipline, and making sure everyone around you is on the same page.

How important are these values to the success of your brand?

To me, these values are rules I live by. It is important for me and my team to be mindful when creating anything. As a team, we are always working on ways to improve the materials we use; reuse and recycle where possible. Improving packaging, shipping materials and trims; it is an ever-growing process and learning.

Tell us about your partnership with Aveda and what synergies you share as a brand.

We connected over a decade ago on our shared value for sustainability and creating mindful products that spark joy within. We hold the same view on balancing luxury, quality, sustainability, and design – which has made our partnerships seem effortless and real, there has been a deep connection from the start.

In what way are the four limited-edition gifts sustainable? Do you have a favourite and why?

Our limited-edition accessories are made with post-consumer materials, are 100% vegan, cruelty free, and the packaging is fully recyclable.

My favourite? That’s a hard question! I love each of the products in our collection, but I think my favourite would have to be the hair scarf. The print is so vibrant and brings a pop of colour to any look, especially for the holidays.

We are keen to hear more about how Phillip Lim has spearheaded several community initiatives. Why is this important and what has been the outcome?

The last few years, I’ve spent time building meaningful projects for the communities that are important to me. Advocating for #StopAsianHate in 2021 evolved into many initiatives from fundraising to rallies to education for the wider fashion industry.  In 2021 I developed “House of Slay” alongside my Slaysian crew: Prabal Gurung, Tina Leung, Ezra Williams and Laura Kim. We launched a community that serves as a safe and inclusive space for underrepresented voices from all walks of life. We stand for creating magic and choosing to become your own superhero.

What’s the inspiration behind the packaging in terms of design and being recyclable? Is all your packaging recyclable?

The artwork was designed in collaboration with botanical artist, Sophie Parker. She hand painted the print using nature as her guide to create a beautiful print that celebrates the importance of connection and intent. As for the sustainable packaging – Aveda prioritizes using post consumer recycled materials in all of their packaging – which means so much to me. One of the many reasons we make great partners, we share the same values.

Tell us about your latest fashion designs and what you see as future trends for fashion?

We are currently working on our Fall 23 and Spring collections to capture the essence of New York City.  A city where dreams come to life, through the chaos and beauty. I am excited to share New York with the world; it is a new and exciting chapter for 3.1.

Given your mission is about living with intention, how can we do this best when it comes to gifting this Christmas?

My idea of living with intention when it comes to gift giving is giving loved ones something that they can enjoy from within. I love gifting plants and also the gift of a home-cooked meal; something that nourishes the body and heart.

What are your future plans?

To continue growing the 3.1 brand, our ongoing collaboration with Aveda, community initiatives, some projects in film and my food lover’s guide to home cooked meals, ‘More Than Our Bellies’.

The Aveda x 3.1 Phillip Lim limited-edition collection is available starting 16th October 2022 in Aveda salons, spas, stores, select retails partners, and online at Aveda.

Accessories can be purchased individually or alongside Aveda’s vegan, high-performing products in an assortment of curated gift sets. The limited-edition accessories are also available online at Phillip Lim.
