Forget slapping a dab of toothpaste on your pimples! Today’s adolescents are decidedly more sophisticated. And, as a result, teenage skin care routines have transformed in recent years – with a growing number of teens considering products beyond the classic cleanser and moisturiser. But, with serums packed with active ingredients like salicylic acid, niacinamide, and vitamin C, the big question remains: how young is too young to dive into the world of serums? Founder & CEO of Bubble skin care Shai Eisenman, shares her tips on helping your tweens, teens (and beyond!) put their best face forward.

Skin care start-up

For teens dealing with breakout-prone or oily skin, the temptation to jump into a full skin care regime is understandable. However, Shai recommends focusing on simplicity until any serious skin concerns arise. “Skin care is highly individual. Prior to 14, most people’s skin is simply too sensitive for highly active ingredients. Even then, it’s best to consult a dermatologist before starting a serum. Especially, one with ingredients like salicylic acid or vitamin C.”

Bubble’s Dermatologist Advisory Board, which includes eight dermatologists, helps ensure that each product is safe and effective. Some ingredients, such as AHA (alpha-hydroxy acids) and retinoids, are best avoided by teens due to their potency.

From breakouts … and beyond

In Bubble’s simple approach to skin care, serums fall into the “Treat” step, applied right after cleansing to target specific concerns with lightweight, active ingredients. As Shai explains, “cleansers cleanse, moisturisers hydrate, and serums deliver targeted results for issues like acne or hyperpigmentation.” The Bubble team advises that anyone under 14 should generally avoid products with strong actives, and only use them if they genuinely have a skin concern that warrants treatment.

“The most common mistake is using products with powerful actives on sensitive, young skin,” she explains. For teens who genuinely need a serum for concerns like acne, consulting a dermatologist or starting with a patch test can help prevent irritation.

She adds, “Serums should be reserved for treating specific concerns and only after simpler solutions – like a gentle cleanser, moisturiser, and sunscreen – have been consistently used.”

For teens ready to try serums, starting slow and with gentle formulas is essential. Bubble’s “slow and steady wins the face” philosophy is all about using products that respect the natural skin barrier, treating specific issues without overwhelming young skin.
