4 Ancient Australian Plants With Skin Magic

Emily Rohr, the founder and creator of Australian-made skincare Rohr Remedy, reports on Australian plant power.

Aussie animals get a lot of great press – the cuddly koalas, the epic roos, and the cheeky kookaburras.

But our exceptional plants have real magic, with amazing properties found nowhere else on earth. It is no wonder indigenous Australians have been wild-harvesting and using medicinally for thousands of years – you can put them in a vase for beauty and smell, cook with them… but by using them on your skin, you can harness the power of the bush to keep it healthy, strong, elastic and glowing.

kakadu plum, skin care
Kakadu Plum

Kakadu Plum has the highest Vitamin C content in the world – 100 times more than oranges – because to survive desert country it has to hold onto nutrients. And when it’s wild-harvested, like ours, it has 200x more Vit C then when farmed. It was traditionally used to treat colds, flu, and headaches as well as antiseptic or soothing balm. We at Rohr Remedy use it for its nourishing and brightening effects and the powerful antioxidants and bio actives that do wonders for your skin. You’ll find it in our Face Serum and our Activated Charcoal Soap.

Lilly Pilly

Lilly Pilly is another magical flora, a rich source of antioxidants – essential for cell regeneration and restoring skin balance – plus Vitamin C and fruit acid, making skin look radiant and youthful. It is also a gentle natural astringent to firm and exfoliate the skin. That’s why we made a Lilly Pilly Face Moisturiser for daily radiance.

boab
Boab

Beautiful Boab trees give us seeds full of essential fatty acids, Vitamins A, D, E, C and F, plus Calcium, Potassium, Magnesium and other minerals – making it a great oil for everyday skincare and for tackling UV damage, hyperpigmentation, scars and stretch marks. The magnesium is great for fighting wrinkles, while calcium brings firmness and elasticity. Plus boab’s antiviral, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties encourage smoother skin. It’s the multivit for your skin, which is why we pack our Face & Body Oil full of it.

Desert Lime, a true wild citrus fruit, also has high concentrations of Vitamin C (encouraging natural collagen production) and E, Folate and antioxidants. Folate helps heal and replenish, so we combine it with olive and coconut oils for a richly hydrating Body Moisturiser that can be used to fight dry skin and eczema.

Also amazing for skin are Australian Gumbi Gumbi, Lemon Myrtle, Quandong, Davidson Plum, Wattle, Rosalina, Fragonia, Kunzea, Tamarind seeds – I could go on. You’ll find them all working hard in our products to look after skin of every kind.

As Mother’s Day approaches, here at Rohr Remedy we will be giving thanks for our mums, the knowledge of Australian mothers passed down through the centuries, and the magical native plants of this motherland that take such good care of our skin.
