It’s a powerful and inclusive message that I wish more adults had courageously instilled in me as a child – and I’m sure I’m not alone. To the misfits, the kids that don’t quite ‘fit in’, that don’t adhere to ‘normal’ – to you beautiful, brave, passionate rebels who choose your own, rather than someone else’s path, bravo! This was exactly the inspiring message that Angelina Jolie-Pitt had for misfit kids everywhere at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards.

Making her first public appearance since she announced news of her elective surgery to remove her ovaries, the humanitarian actress and director gave a moving speech when accepting the honour of Best Villain for her portrayal of the lead character in last year’s “Sleeping Beauty” offshoot – Maleficent.

Looking on proudly from the audience, two of her own children – Shiloh and Zahara – watched as their Mum gave a powerful speech about fitting in, or more importantly not  fitting in. Angelina told audiences that as a child she “felt out of place – to loud, too full of fire, never good at sitting still, never good at fitting in. And then one day, I realised something – something that I hope you all realise. Different is good. When someone tells you that you are different, smile and hold your head up and be proud.”

Hear, Hear Angelina!
